About the Item

I am offering you this spectacular large "Royal Vienna" Porcelain plaque, which is artist signed Forster. The plaque is entitled "Herse opfert der Minerva" on its back. Herse was the daughter of Cecrops. She is the beautiful lady dressed in a white flowing robes in the painting. The four ladies in their flowing robes are walking barefoot carrying baskets of flowers on their heads to give the flowers as an offering to Minerva at the Acropolis. Minerva was the Italian goddess of handicrafts who presided over the arts especially dramatic poets and actors. The plaque is 16.5 inches in diameter. The border of the plaque has raised blue jeweling on a pink ground with a gilded border. The painting is framed by a border of raised gilded jewels. There is a raised gilded arabesque design as well as raised gilded flowers and leaves around the painting. The plaque also has raised blue and gold jeweling accents with four small gilded butterflies. It is truly a fabulous piece of artwork. In the late nineteenth century, there were porcelain companies in Austria and Germany that painted their porcelain pieces in the Royal Vienna style, as there was not a Royal Vienna company during this period. At this time, there was a resurgence in the demand for beautifully painted porcelain pieces. The Vienna company closed in 1864. Many of these "Royal Vienna" porcelain masterpieces were after famous paintings that are in museums. Many of these companies painted magnificent portrait plates, porcelain plaques, vases and urns. The painting on many of these pieces, like this porcelain plaque are museum quality, and heavily embellished with intricate raised gilding. These fabulous porcelain masterpieces are very popular and sought after, now as well as in the past. They are extremely collectible due to their intricate detailed fabulous artwork. Price of Plaque-$2500.00.
