18th Century Wedgwood Solid Green Jasper Stoneware Bough Pot, Cupid as Seasons

About the Item

Etruria, Staffordshire, circa 1785, chalky solid buff-green jasper ware rectangular molded body, applied and finely undercut white jasper bas- and haut-relief decoration depicting cupid as each of the four seasons under a palm arcade, scalloped gallery with scrolling acanthus and anthemion, fit with solid white jasper lid cut with nine holes, on decorated square feet, impressed "WEDGWOOD" at base, 6 1/2 x 5 x 5 in. A matching blue jasper pair are illustrated in the accompanying catalog for The Dwight and Lucille Beeson Wedgwood Collection at the Birmingham Museum of Art (Elizabeth Bryding Adams). From page 123: "The shapes of the vessel and the palmlike trees that arch over each figure at the corners were probably derived from Mountfaucon from the Saint Genevieve collection (Mountfaucon, L'Antiquite expliquee, vol. 5, pt. 1, p.52, pl 14, fig. 2. Cabinet of S. Genevieve). The cupids are adaptions from Flaxman's Marlborough gem, probably produced in 1782."
