About the Item

This is a famous pottery tea bowl called Karatsu ware from Saga Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. It is thought to have been fired around the early to mid-Edo period. Karatsu ware is pottery made mainly in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, and is designated as a national traditional craft. The history of Karatsu ware is said to have begun around the end of the 16th century. Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought back Korean potters when he dispatched troops to Korea, and the production volume increased by adopting their techniques. Karatsu ware is mainly made of rough clay, and the vessels give a simple yet powerful impression. There are several different colors of glaze, but all of them have a Japanese wabi-sabi feel. It has been favored by tea masters since ancient times, and is still highly valued today. Karatsu ware is produced in a wide variety of kilns, and the subtle differences in the clay and glaze used at each kiln make for an interesting piece. This item was likely fired in the area circled in red on the map. It is covered in black glaze, and is classified as a type of Karatsu ware known as "Kuro Karatsu". The design is very simple and covered in black glaze, but on closer inspection, the black also has a gradation, making it very deep to look at. Also, as this is an excavated item, there are traces of gold paint repairs on chipped areas. The beautifully rounded curves and relatively fine clay body give it a beautiful overall impression.
