17th Century Antique Charles I Sterling Silver Goblet, 1630
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique Charles I English sterling silver goblet; an addition to our collectable range of 17th century silverware.
This exceptional antique Charles I sterling silver goblet / wine cup has a tapering cylindrical bell-shaped form onto a circular knopped pedestal and swept circular foot.
The surface of this antique silver goblet is embellished with chased overlapping organic decoration to the lower portion.
The upper portion of the body is encompassed with a flat engraved border accented with simplified scrolling designs above the contemporary engraved initials 'WEA'.
The drinking vessel surmounts an impressive plain circular knopped pedestal to a circular spreading foot embellished with further chased organic designs, replicating the style of that to the body.
The underside of the foot bears the engraved initials 'MRA', in addition to the lion passant hallmark.
Such smaller goblets of this period are extremely rare; typically pieces were crafted in the form of a chalice.
Note: This goblet was previously advertised as Lot 340 in the 'How of Edinburgh Sale' and sold for £20,000 plus buyer's premium; the date of the Woolley and Wallis sale was 30th October, 2007.
Condition
This impressive 17th century silver goblet is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
The flat engraved decoration has sympathetic wear, as to be expected.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the goblet and lion passant to the underside of the foot are all very clear.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.
