About the Item

An Important Early Meissen Porcelain Teapot, Ca. 1735-40: Finely Painted with Chinoiserie Trading Scenes and Gilt Decoration An exceptional and important early Meissen porcelain teapot and cover, a definitive example of European craftsmanship during the nascent years of hard-paste porcelain production. Dating to the pivotal period of circa 1735-1740, this teapot embodies the artistic ambition of the Meissen manufactory under the directorship of Johann Gregor Höroldt, whose innovations in enamel colors and decorative themes revolutionized the porcelain trade. The teapot's form is both robust and elegant, featuring a powerfully sculpted beast's head spout, often interpreted as a dragon—a motif highly prized in early Meissen wares. The body serves as a canvas for a continuous, finely hand-painted maritime narrative. Reserved within shaped cartouches edged in black and lavishly framed by elaborate Rococo-style gilt scrollwork, the scenes depict a fascinating fusion of European imagination and fascination with the Orient. Both sides and the lid illustrates a vibrant tea trading scene, with merchants engaged in discussion alongside a quay, with tall ships and a distant castle hinting at a prosperous European port. The reverse presents figures of high society in elegant discourse, capturing the social ritual of tea drinking that this very object would have served. The cover continues this intricate narrative with its own detailed vignette. The decoration is elevated by extensive and rich 22-24K gold gilding, which adorns the scrollwork borders, the rim of the cover, the handle, the base rim, and accentuates the central scenes. The piece bears the iconic underglaze blue crossed swords mark, confirming its prestigious origin. Condition: This teapot is in outstanding original condition for its considerable age of nearly 300 years. There is no evidence of restoration or damage. The surface exhibits minor, expected age-related wear to the gilding and subtle traces of gentle use, all consistent with its status as a cherished historical object. These slight patinations only affirm its authenticity and venerable age. This is a true collector's piece, a museum-quality example of early 18th-century porcelain that represents a significant moment in art and cultural history. It is a worthy centerpiece for the most discerning collections of Meissen, European porcelain, or Chinoiserie.
