About the Item

Early 20th century male baule figure, ivory coast, Africa A stylistically pleasing sculpture of a spiritual spouse (blolo bian) from the Baule culture. This excellent example is posed in the Classic Baule power posture and hits all the traditional points. The head is held high on an elongated neck, with an elegant, elaborate coiffure, precise facial scaring, hands resting on the lower abdomen in a gesture of peace and strong, slightly bent legs. The overall effect is of a strong, powerful, calm and confident spiritual spouse.
