Yaka Carved wood standing Janus back to back male/female divination figure DRC Congo, Africa
The figure is 17 1/2" inches mounted on a custom metal stand. Male figure with open mouth with exposed carved teeth. Wear, polish and deep patina from traditional use. Traces of red and white pigments around eyes and ringing each face, dividing them vertically from side to side. According to Arthur Bourgeois, author of "Yaka" by 5 Continents, figures such as this were used by the diviner of the village to help with healing and protecting the village.
Created mid 20th century or earlier.
