Édouard Élie Jules Cayette, born on May 27, 1882 in Paris and died on January 2, 1953 in Nancy, was a French ironworker, bronze worker, cabinetmaker, sculptor and interior decorator, representative of the Art Nouveau movement, then of that of Art Deco.
In 1896, he enrolled for the first time at the municipal and regional school of fine arts in Nancy. He left the school in 1899 and entered as an apprentice with Férez, a wood sculptor and carpenter from Nancy.
In 1900, he re-enrolled at the Beaux-Arts in Nancy, while continuing his apprenticeship with Schwartz. He left the school for good in 1902. During this apprenticeship, he received instruction from Victor Prouvé and Eugène Vallin. His classmates were Auguste Vallin, Joseph Mougin and Pierre Mougin.
In 1904, he joined Jacques Gruber as a collaborator, where he perfected his style. He modeled many compositions and made sculptures in place of the master as far as furniture was concerned. The workshop then adjoined that of Vallin, hence the latter's definite influence on Cayette's early works.
In 1910, Jules Cayette set up his own business and officially began his activity on August 1st. From 1912, he exhibited regularly at the Société lorraine des amis des arts. It was at this time that he met his main patron, Saint-Just Péquart (1881-1944).
He set up his first workshop on rue Collinet de La Salle in Nancy in 1913, the date of his first mention in the Meurthe-et-Moselle commercial directory. He married Marie Lucie Berche (1893-1933) on May 11, 1918. In 1919, he moved and set up his workshop at 63, rue des Jardiniers (which would be supplemented by the one on rue du Montet, currently avenue du Général Leclerc, bought from the widow Guth).
The 1920s were the glory years of the workshops, which employed a dozen workers. The productions were very varied: from bronze ashtrays to light fixtures — always with Daum glassware...

Artistic Arts and Crafts Wrought Iron Standard Floor Lamp, signed L. Van Boeckel
By Louis Van Boeckel
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare Louis Van Boeckel wrought iron floor lamp or Oil Lamp.
This magnificently handcrafted Art Nouveau lamp was originally made as an oil lamp. At some point in time oil lamps went out of fashion and that is when this oil lamp was transformed into an electrical lamp. On top you can still see the rimb on which the oil reservoir would have rested.
Obviously what makes this work of art so beautiful is the design and the incredible details and the natural shape of the leaves, the flowers etc. This is the work of a true artist and you will enjoy it every time you see and use it. Comes with embossed stamp ‘LVANBOECKEL’.
Mind you, our fair price even includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door within 4 days.
Height: 66 inches .
Louis Van Boeckel (1857-1944) of Lier, Belgium, was one of the most important ornamental blacksmiths of his time. He was an apprentice to the Verwilt factory in Lier, but developed most of his skills as an artisan by himself. His work, including some of his important animal depictions, can be found in the Timmermanns-Opsomer-Haus Museum in Lier.
Van Boeckel’s numerous awards included the gold medal at the Exposition du Cercle Rubens (1890), le Prix de l’Art appliqué à la rue, Brussels (1893) and the Grande Médaille d’Or and title of Chevalier de l’ordre Royal du Cambodge at the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1900). He is also responsible for work on the grid of the city hall of Lier after 1890, the grave decorations for Czar Alexander III in St. Petersburg and Queen Marie-Henriette in Laeken, the staircases of honor of the Khedive Palace in Cairo and Benedictine monastery on Mount Olive...

Pair of French 19th-20th Century Neoclassical Style Cast Iron Figural Torchères
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine pair of French 19th-20th century neoclassical style patinated cast iron figural torchères by A. Durenne, Paris, each representing a figure of a standing young maiden, her arms raised forward while holding a a flaming urn gas light (Now electrified) with a frosted glass flame, each raised on a veined grey marble column stand, both cast-signed 'A. Durenne, Paris'. Antoine Durenne was an internationally renowned French art founder. He attended École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1842. Durenne purchased a small foundry in Sommevoire, near the Val d'Osne, Haute-Marne, France and established The Durenne firm, circa Paris, 1900.
Cast-iron had been in production during the 18th century but its inferior status to the more fashionable and delicate wrought iron had generally confined its use to architectural work. By the early 19th century, however, rapid developments of the Industrial Revolution combined with the simultaneous burgeoning of a new middle class provided the impetus for a dramatic Expansion in its application and in a short space of time a proliferation of iron foundries across Europe and America thrived on the production of everything from inkstands to railway stations. The use of cast-iron for garden ornament became particularly widespread at this time, as the possibilities for its mass-production at a fraction of the cost of bronze made it the material of choice for outdoor statuary...
