Brass Wall Light by Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce, Italy 1950s

About the Item

This brass wall light by Gino Sarfatti, produced for Arteluce in the 1950s and featured in Gino Sarfatti 1938–1973: Selected Works by Romanelli & Severi, shows how little is needed to hold a space. Design Three bowl-shaped reflectors are mounted on a single brass arm, projecting from a central disc fixed to the wall. The reflectors point upward, catching light and pushing it back toward the wall in a soft, fan-like gradient. Below, small circular diffusers close each bowl, shaping the downlight. The composition is symmetrical, yet never static. Sarfatti gives the arms a subtle curve, introducing rhythm without fuss. Brass throughout carries a natural patina, with areas of slight oxidation adding warmth and texture to the finish. When lit, the fixture performs in two directions: soft glow above, clean accent below. The lamp sits close to the wall. Designed under the Arteluce banner, this piece reflects Sarfatti’s ability to merge technical clarity with sculptural restraint. It doesn't impose, but it defines. Condition Condition is very good with some beautiful patina. The brass shows natural aging and minor surface wear, wiring has been checked and works as intended.

By Gino Sarfatti, Arteluce
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce, wall light, variation on model ‘181’, enameled steel, enameled aluminum, enameled brass, brass, steel wire, Italy, circa 1951 This wall light, a variation on model 181, is designed by the influential designer in the field of lighting design Gino Sarfatti (1912-1985) for Arteluce in 1951. Sarfatti founded Arteluce in 1936, an Italian lighting company that garnered acclaim for its groundbreaking and pioneering designs, defying conventional norms prevalent during that period. Functional principles, such as flexibility and adaptability, guided Sarfatti through the design process. He conceived a modular approach to lighting systems, enabling the user to personalize and adjust the lighting fixtures according to its preferences and needs. A significant part of the released designs incorporated practical elements, such as adjustable arms and rotating mechanisms. This innovative approach had a profound influence on the conceptualization and utilization of lighting within interiors around that time. In addition to their functional attributes, the lamps crafted by the company were predominantly characterized by a pure and minimalist aesthetic. A decoration was subordinate to the constructive element, focusing on the essential composition of geometric forms and usage of materials. Gino Sarfatti considers this type of wall lights as ‘extendible wall sconce...
