Osvaldo Borsani Carved Pearwood Bed

About the Item

Osvaldo Borsani, 'Letto Matrimoniale' for Arredamenti Borsani, Varedo, c. 1930. This exceptional example of early Italian modernism was designed by Osvaldo Borsani for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo around 1930. It is carved from solid pear wood and veneer, with ornamentation inspired by Giovanni Garibaldi. The footboard is trimmed with brass along the lower edge and is adorned with a carved foliate frieze that showcases the fine craftsmanship. This piece is representative of the tradition of Lombardian craftsmanship, particularly that of the Brianza region, and reflects the continuity of the Borsani family workshop, which was led by Gaetano Borsani. Although the form is curved, the design remains restrained and structured, which is characteristic of Northern Italian cabinetmaking at that time. The carving on the footboard follows a stylised vegetal motif, executed with the precision typical of the Borsani workshop. This rare collector's item offers both historical significance and the potential to add a touch of symbolism to an interior. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Archivio Osvaldo Borsani.
