About the Item
Custer, Elizabeth B. Tenting on the Plains or General Custer in Kansas and Texas. New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1887. First edition. Octavo. Original brown cloth boards, embossed with gilt, red, blue, and gray to front, gilt titles to spine. Illustrated throughout.
Presented is a first edition printing of Tenting on the Plains, or General Custer in Kansas and Texas by Elizabeth B. Custer. It was published in New York by Charles L. Webster & Company, in 1887. It is presented in its original brown cloth boards, embossed in gilt, red, blue, and gray. The book is decorated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of then Brevet Major General Custer and 28 mid-text illustrations, including two maps.
After President Ulysses S. Grant publicly blamed General Armstrong Custer for the disaster at Little Bighorn, Elizabeth Custer, the general’s wife, took on the role of his public defender. Beginning with her book, Boots and Saddles, in 1885, she would go on to publish a trilogy of autobiographical works about the life of her martyred husband. In Tenting on the Plains, which has been credited with adding greatly to the Custer legend, Elizabeth Custer described their marriage and experiences from the end of the Civil War and throughout subsequent Indian campaigns to 1867.
The book starts with a dedication, "To him Whose Brave and Blithe Endurance Made Those Who Followed Him Forget, In His Sunshiny Presence, Half the Hardship and the Danger." It continues with a short “Biographical Sketch of Major-General George A. Custer” and then details those years between 1865 and 1867 over 23 chapters.

Revised Edition. Rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with original cloth gilt-stamped pictorial front board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a custom archival slipcase to match. This is a “Revised Edition” of the Rand, McNally & Co.'s Overland Guide From the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, via Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The book was edited by Charles S. Gleed and published by Rand, McNally & Co., in Chicago in 1883. It has been artfully rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with the original gilt-stamped pictorial front cloth board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a matching archival cloth slipcase.
As explained in the beginning of the guidebook, the purpose of the book is “to give the reader a satisfactory general idea of the States and Territories of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, through which the traveler passes in going from the Missouri river to the Pacific ocean, or vice versa, entering or leaving California at its southern extremity.” Following the southern route of railways, editor Charles Gleed lays out in extensive detail information on each state, including population numbers, key industries, important towns and railway stations, farming and agriculture, mining opportunities, and weather patterns.
Throughout the guidebook are countless engravings, both full page and in-text, from well known engravers of the time. Meant to further entice readers to take this overland journey, the illustrations offer views of key tourist spots, townviews, and scenic destinations, throughout the featured states of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The guidebook is also supplemented by pages of printed advertisements in the beginning of the book, showcasing local businesses, services, and wares.
