BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Collection-Grade White Lace Agate Geode with Violet Druzy Cave
Located in Ametista Do Sul, BR
A Collector's Specimen, Perfect for a Collection with its Rare White Agate Laces and Purple Amethyst Interior ▫️ Description Brazil ranks among the world’s leading agate producers, and once in a while, a geode of this caliber is uncovered. This rare agate features once-in-a-lifetime color combinations, stunning aesthetics, and—most impressively—an undamaged structure. It’s a specimen to be cherished in any agate collection, or as the focal point of your space. Among its many special qualities, the white agate laces and perfectly formed amethyst center stand out. These layers reveal a geological process spanning millions of years: starting with moss agate, transitioning into bold bone-white laces interspersed with thin sky-blue stripes, and ultimately culminating in a violet purple amethyst cave...

Natural Real Citrine Obelisk Tower, AAA Water-Clear Honey Orange Citrine
Located in Ametista Do Sul, BR
AAA Natural Honey Orange Citrine Obelisk Tower: A Display of Exceptional Water-Clear Citrine Crystal ▫️ Description Standing tall in its obelisk tower form, this natural citrine is an outstanding sculpture that blends Nature's perfect crystal with the highest level of craftsmanship. This citrine will surely become an extraordinary addition to any collection and a fabulous accent piece for your space. The first thing to emphasize is the raw, unheated quality of this citrine. It not only ensures its rarity but also preserves the intact vibrations that set this specimen apart. The water-clear interior of this citrine, adorned with natural inclusions and fractures that form swirls and waves, sparks curiosity about the formation of such pristine quartz. As light reflects and dances off these unique features, it creates the illusion of an inner glow and perpetual motion, adding to its rarity and allure. We decided to keep the citrine specimen in the exact format it was found in nature and to further highlight the interior of the specimen, the faces were polished using cerium oxide (CeO2), giving it a world-class lapidary finish that is unseen in similar pieces. Another highlight of this raw citrine point is its color, a color tone that is called "Honey Orange Citrine". This color tone can be fully appreciated under sunlight, as well as under a warm yellow light. Quality-wise, this Citrine is of Super Extra (AAA) Grade, offering water-clear translucency, gorgeous aesthetics, and a beautiful tone of Honey Orange. This Natural Citrine is specimen to be honored, sure to find its way to a prime spot in your collection or as a striking addition to your space. Please message us if you have a particular request or question and take a look at the video and at the details on the pictures. 🧡 ▫️ Natural Real Citrine Tower...
