Bohemian Furniture

BOHEMIAN STYLE

Defying design conventions and embracing all tastes, Bohemian style, or Boho style, is eclectic, bold and, above all, individual. Vintage Bohemian-style furniture and decor feature bright colors, natural materials and a global spirit, ranging from statement pieces such as peacock chairs constructed with wicker and handmade art-glass vases to jewel-toned plush seating like turquoise sofas.

Although Bohemian furniture is not rooted in a specific time and can include Victorian lamps alongside Space Age chairs, its name dates back to the 19th century. Its exact origins are unclear, with some sources linking it to a counterculture formed in the wake of the French Revolution and others to a pejorative for the Romani people in France who were erroneously believed to be from Bohemia, which was part of what is now the Czech Republic.

By the 1850s, “bohemian” was used to describe someone who led an itinerant life, usually an artist, actor or author. This helped shift the term from disparaging to something romantic and evoking creativity, culture and travel. In the 20th century, to be a bohemian was fashionable, and the celebration of free expression in the 1960s gave the Bohemian style a hippie flair. It has remained popular over the years, especially with younger generations seeking to express their personality and individual perspective through furniture, folk art, antiques and other collectibles.

A Bohemian interior exuberantly mixes textures and patterns, particularly through textiles from around the world in tapestries, rugs and upholstery. Bohemian decor can include Japanese shibori, Indonesian ikat and Kazakhstani suzani prints mingling with Moroccan lanterns, Turkish carpets and wall hangings from India. Saturated earthy colors like burnt orange and marigold yellow are common to bring together the mix of vintage, modern and global design.

Luxury Vintage Irish Linen Pillow by Katie Larmour Couture Cushions Blue Stripe
Located in Belfast, Northern Ireland
Luxury pillow created from exquisite and rare deadstock Irish Linen by Irish designer Katie Larmour. Made from quality deadstock, pure, 100% Irish Linen made from the flax plant, from an unused roll. Beautiful texture and sumptuous to touch. (This is small batch making, once this fabric is gone it's gone.) Each cushion is handmade in Ireland. Lined in organic cotton, and finished with a concealed zip. Recommended 20x20" feather filler insert for plumpness. Backed in new natural undyed Irish linen on the reverse. Irish Linen is highly regarded worldwide, known since the turn-of-the-century as ‘white gold’ and the ultimate ‘aristocrat of textiles’. Katie Larmour is an associate member of The Irish Linen Guild and highlighted as a ‘recommended purveyor of Irish Linen goods’ by the guild on their official website. Katie is an ambassador The European Confederation of Flax and Hemp (CELC). Katie Larmour’s Studio are renowned for their high end creations. In beautiful, soft tones of blue and navy with a French seaside, deckchair vibe Both the hue and striped pattern make this a wonderfully versatile piece, working particularly well with beach house, yachts, sailboat, nautical decor, rustic, country manor house, bohemian and ‘shabby-chic’ interiors. More than one is available. There may be a lead making time of approx 1-2 weeks (often a small amount of stock is made and ready for immediate shipping) Please note the nature of linen is that the surface may contain ‘slubs’, this is to do with the weaving process. They are not seen as flaws and add to the textile’s character and charm, it is the nature of the natural fabric and we ask you to take this into consideration before ordering. Set Of 5 Royal Blue Liqueur Glasses, 1880s, France, Crystal Glass
Located in Greven, DE
A beautiful set of five long-stemmed liqueur glasses made from cut and clear crystal in a deep royal blue colour. The glasses, eventually Bohemian crystal glass, are mouth-blown and feature a beautiful diamond and fan pattern. In 19th century France, the art of glassmaking experienced a renaissance inspired by the rich history and heritage of ancient techniques. Antique glasses from this era are not only masterpieces of craftsmanship, but also important cultural artefacts that reflect the aesthetics and lifestyle of the time. Glassmaking in France had a long tradition dating back to Roman times. During the 19th century, French glass art experienced a revival, fuelled by technological advances and a growing demand for ornate objects for the home. A notable feature of antique glass from the 19th century is its variety of styles and techniques. French glassmakers mastered a wide range of techniques, including blowing, moulding, cutting, engraving and painting glass. These skills were utilised to produce a variety of glassware, from opulent crystal vases to delicate drinking glasses. Glasses also played an important role in the social and cultural circles of 19th century France. They were often used at festive occasions such as banquets, receptions and balls and were seen as symbols of status and taste. The art of glassmaking became a prestigious craft practised by talented artists and craftsmen. Today, antique 19th century glassware...
