Antique Caucasian Avar Kilim circa 1900
About the Item
An extraordinary and rare antique Caucasian Avar flat-weave kilim with striking indigo blue field featuring a bold design with intricacy of drawing. The theme of the design is the story of dragon and phoenix combat that is rendered in a primitive manner. The phoenix has jagged plumage swept over itself, while the dragon with whom it wertels has many hooked limbs. The weaver has skilfully managed to fit these creatures within their octagonal format.
The border of this Avar is decorated on one side with eight point stars and on the other side with quite different motifs of stylised phoenix and dragon symbolising the conflict between the material and spiritual. Notice the beautiful pale yellow of the guard border of serpent probably curled leaves. The kilim has a woven dates on it next to a mysterious woven ladder. The dates read 1901. There are few very old restorations on this kilim, few loose stitches but overall condition of it considering the age is excellent. All sides and ends are original, all dyes to make this kilim are absolutely organic.
