Antique Turkish Bergama Rug, Circa 1920
About the Item
Unique in spanning both the continents of Europe and Asia, Turkey has a tradition of carpet-making for centuries and draws inspiration from Turkish culture but also its Eastern neighbors the Caucasus and Turkestan. This rare piece, perhaps a Bergama or Melas, is a great example of the influence of those cultures. In design, this carpet is reminiscent of those in Caucasus, in weaving structure it resembles western Turkey and in colors a great representation of traditional Islamic Arts.
The pale green field of this carpet surrounded by different shades of red is framed with three guard borders that are uniquely kazak, yet again the influence of Caucasian weaving. There are no restorations performed on this carpet and otherwise is in excellent condition.
