About the Item

Flemming Lassen Armchairs in Original Velvet Upholstery, Denmark 1930s These modernist armchairs, attributed to Flemming Lassen (1902-1984), feature a beautifully lyrical and dynamic silhouette with a sculptural form. They are crafted with a beech frame and legs, upholstered in original velvet from the 1930s in Denmark. The chairs are in excellent vintage condition, although the upholstery shows minor signs of wear. It is advisable to consider reupholstering them before regular use. Flemming Lassen was an architect known for both his buildings and furniture designs, particularly for creating inviting interiors. He played a significant role in introducing functionalism to Denmark, a design philosophy that emphasizes practicality over ornamentation. Lassen is best recognized for his plush vintage sofas, lounge chairs, and the Tired Man armchair as well as the Mingle sofa. Born to two painters, Flemming attended boarding school with his brother, architect Mogens Lassen, where they became friends with Arne Jacobsen. All three shared a passion for functionalism; Jacobsen emerged as a leading figure in Scandinavian modernism, famous for designs like the Swan chair and the Egg chair. The trio maintained a close relationship and often collaborated. Notably, they were recognized at the 1929 Architects Building and Housing Exhibition for their innovative "House of the Future," a circular structure equipped with an automatic garage door and advanced windows. Flemming frequently worked with his brother Mogens, designing furniture and buildings together. In 1935, he created the Tired Man armchair for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition, which was followed by the design of the Mingle sofa in 1938. Today, both pieces are highly sought after by collectors.
