Roberto Menghi for Arflex, pair of ‘Hall’ lounge chairs, metal, leather, Italy, 1958 In 1958, Roberto Menghi designs an interesting series of armchairs and sofas for Arflex. The designer titled the designs as the ‘Hall’ collection. A year later, the ‘Hall’ armchair received an honorable mention for the Compasso d’Oro. These armchairs have a very sculptural appearance, yet also an elegant feel. This is especially achieved by the sleek, almost delicate looking legs. Therefore, the more bulky seat and armrests create a perfect balance with the expressive lines of the legs. A nice detail of the legs are the endings, which taper out. Because the design is slightly tilted, the chair is not only visually pleasing to the eye but very comfortable to sit in. Roberto Menghi was born in Milan in 1920. From a young age, Menghi was influenced by architecture and design and important event in his life was when he spent some time in England, where his father worked as a manager of Pirelli. In this period, when Menghi was around ten years old, he found his love for the English world based on pragmatic ethics and the importance of undertaken commitments. After his graduation from Politecnico di Milano in 1944, Menghi took part in the Second World War. However, after the Armistice, his opposition to the setting up of the Italian Social Republic led him to being a prisoner in a concentration camp in Czechtochowa. When he was finally freed, he was able to open his own design studio in Milan, where he specialized in architecture, interior design and industrial design. During his career, Menghi was awarded with the Compasso d’Oro price for two of his designs. Furthermore, he was awarded with two Grand Prizes at Triennale for the sections "glass" and "design". Much of his life, Menghi dedicated himself to the restoration of buildings such as the Palace of Giureconsulti in Milan. Moreover, he taught architecture at the University of Venice and Milan. Additionally, he gave lessons in design at the New Academy in Milan as well as the Bath Academy located in the UK. Menghi died in 2006 but is nowadays a well-known and loved Italian architect and designer. Arflex

From its unorthodox beginnings, Italian manufacturer Arflex grew into one of the leaders of 20th-century furniture design. Its furniture came to be known for its integration of new materials and bold appeal, and today a variety of vintage Arflex chairs, sofas and tables are emblems of mid-century modernism.

Arflex was established in Milan in 1947 by Pirelli employees Carlo Barassi, Pio Reggiani, Renato Teani and Aldo Bai. Barassi, a Milan Polytechnic graduate and visionary engineer at the Italian tire manufacturer, explored innovative technology and new uses for synthetic materials in domestic products (for Kartell, he codeveloped a ski rack for automobiles). The four founders partnered with a young architect named Marco Zanuso, who also desired to create furniture that featured an application of novel materials such as elastic tape and polyurethane foam.

One of Arflex’s inaugural pieces was Zanuso’s Lady armchair, a seat made of polyurethane foam that was manufactured in pieces and assembled at the very end of the production process. It won a gold medal at the 1951 Milan Triennale. A couple of years later, Arflex collaborated with Studio BBPR to create the office-chic Elettra and Neptunia chairs. The flourishing furniture company quickly established a reputation for compelling products and attracting and working with up-and-coming designers such as Roberto Menghi, who created Hall, a luxurious line of seating that would earn the Compasso d’Oro – Honorable Mention in 1959.

In the 1960s, Arflex continued to welcome the use of new and cutting-edge materials. Popular designs from this decade include Carlo Bartoli's fiberglass and polyester resin Gaia lounge chair and Cini Boer’s Bobo Relax lounger, one of history’s first seating pieces made of polyurethane foam (it has no internal frame). Boer, a pioneer of furniture design in Italy, also created the Strips sofa for the brand in 1972. Part of a plush modular seating system, the Strips sofa became an Arflex icon and was awarded the Compasso d'Oro in 1979.
