About the Item

This striking set of four Mid-Century Modern chairs, attributed to or inspired by the designs of Arthur Umanoff, blends industrial elegance with organic warmth. Comprising two armchairs and two side chairs, the pieces feature newly painted steel frames in a sleek black finish, offering a robust yet refined foundation. The natural bentwood slat backs and seats, with their smooth, curved lines, introduce a tactile contrast, showcasing the wood’s rich grain and light, airy aesthetic. The armchairs boast gracefully curved armrests, while all four chairs exhibit a minimalist silhouette that reflects the era’s innovative spirit. Ideal for a dining area, patio, or collector’s space, this set embodies the timeless craftsmanship and versatile style associated with Umanoff’s influential designs. Arthur Umanoff (1913–1985) was an American industrial designer renowned for his contributions to Mid-Century Modern furniture, particularly in wrought iron and bentwood. Born in New York, Umanoff studied at the Pratt Institute before establishing his own design practice in the 1940s. He gained prominence for creating functional, sculptural pieces that combined metal frames with organic materials, often collaborating with manufacturers like Raymor to produce affordable yet stylish furniture. His designs, characterized by their playful yet practical forms, became iconic in mid-century interiors, with wrought iron chairs and bar stools remaining highly sought after by collectors for their enduring appeal and innovative craftsmanship. ---Dimensions--- Width: 23.5 in / 59.69 cm Depth: 21 in / 53.34 cm Height: 31.5 in / 80.01 cm Seat Height: 16 in / 40.64 cm Arm Height: 24.5 in / 62.23 cm This extraordinary set of chairs by Arthur Umanoff has recently undergone a comprehensive and transformative restoration process and we love the results. The solid wrought iron frames and legs were professionally sand-blasted and stripped of any rust. Then each frame was painted with single-stage poly-urethane automotive paint to ensure maximum longevity and rust protection for decades to come. Though some chairs have slightly off-centered stances, this was the original intent of Umanoff and the production factory emphasizing the hand-made, one-off nature of each chair. The birchwood seats, backs and armrests have been hand-sanded and left unfinished with a natural wax coating showcasing the exquisite tones and woodgrains of the birch. All seats and back rests have been re-constructed exactly as they were first arranged with even the original brass screws being hand-buffed and re-installed. This instantly recognizable set of Umanoff patio chairs is comfortable, structurally sound and ready for a lifetime more of use thanks to their recent restoration process.
