About the Item

Priced per chair Designed by Josef Hoffmann in 1903 for the entrance hall of the Purkersdorf Sanatorium near Vienna, this chair is a key example of Viennese Modernism and the Vienna Secession movement. The chair was originally produced by the Wiener Werkstätte and later reissued by Austrian manufacturer Wittmann during the 1970s as part of a licensed production. These examples, made during the 1990s, features a white painted beechwood frame with a distinctive woven checkered seat and a matching cushion. The bold geometry and strong contrast reflect Hoffmann’s design principles, which aligned with the clean and orderly aesthetic of the Purkersdorf Sanatorium, a project he also designed.
