About the Item

An extraordinary set of eight of T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings sculptural walnut armchairs for Widdicomb originally purchased in 1959. The chairs are in excellent condition newly upholstered in Edelman cobalt blue dyed leather hide with matching cobalt blue ribbed velvet backs. T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings was a renowned British-born American architect and designer celebrated for his masterful blend of classical influences with modernist sensibilities. His approach emphasized clean lines, refined proportions, and exquisite craftsmanship, establishing him as a leading figure in mid-century modern furniture. Robsjohn-Gibbings' designs often drew inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman art, infusing timeless elegance into contemporary forms. Widdicomb Furniture Company, founded in 1890, was a prominent American manufacturer known for producing high-quality, stylish furniture. In the 1950s, Widdicomb collaborated with Robsjohn-Gibbings, commissioning him to create a collection of sophisticated, geometric dining chairs and other pieces that embodied his signature aesthetic. These designs combined luxurious materials with impeccable craftsmanship and minimalist elegance, making them highly collectible today. The partnership between Robsjohn-Gibbings and Widdicomb resulted in a series of iconic furniture pieces that remain revered examples of mid-century modern design. Their chairs exemplify timeless style, craftsmanship, and a seamless dialogue between ancient inspiration and modern innovation, making them a coveted addition to any discerning collection.
