About the Item

An original lounge chair designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Dorothy H. Turkel House in Detroit, circa 1955. One of only six known examples made specifically for the residence, this piece was part of Wright’s fully integrated design for the home—the only Wright-designed house in Detroit. Constructed from mahogany and mahogany plywood with its original deep red vinyl cushions, the chair showcases Wright’s signature geometric clarity and emphasis on functional form. Its sculptural base and low-slung silhouette reflect his Usonian ideals. This chair remains structurally sound and retains its original materials, with visible wear from residential use. The mahogany frame shows finish wear and areas of discoloration, and one backrest fastener is missing. The original vinyl upholstery is intact with light creasing and surface marks. Unrestored, it presents as a well-used, authentic example with strong provenance. Provenance: Dorothy H. Turkel House, Detroit Acquired from the Turkel estate by Xavier’s Antiques, Detroit Purchased in 1996 by William and Patsy Porter Documented in Frank Lloyd Wright Monograph 1951–1959 by Pfeiffer and Futagawa (pp. 186–187).
