Angelo Mangiarotti Multiuse cabinets Poltronova Italy 1965

About the Item

Fantastic and versatile pair of Multiuse cabinets designed by Angelo Mangiarotti and manufactured by Poltronova in Italy in 1965. The cabinets offers endless possibilities, functioning seamlessly as a large bookcase when positioned together. They are made from ash wood stained in a rare off-white/clay hue. They have a timeless and modern appearance. The four cabinet shelves feature aluminium profiles, not only adding strength but also providing a nice and subtle, almost monochrome, visual contrast against the wood. The graphical design is highlighted by the ability to adjust the sliding doors in various configurations. Slim vertical handles match the door colour of the doors. Behind the six sliding doors lie shelves on either side. It’s almost hard to believe that this design dates back to 1965 as its so modern and stood the test of time perfectly. Kindly note that the listed price is for 1 cabinet, sold and priced individually. Literature; Repertorio Del Design Italiano 195o~2000 Volume 1 Giuliana Gramigna, page 119 Angelo Mangiarotti, born in Milan on February 26, 1921, was an accomplished architect and designer. He graduated in Architecture from Politecnico di Milano in 1948 and later spent time in the United States, where he had the privilege of meeting influential figures like Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, and Konrad Wachsmann. Upon returning to Italy, he co-founded an architectural firm with Bruno Morassutti until 1960. In 1989, he established the Mangiarotti & Associates Office in Tokyo. His contributions also extended to the world of design, as he served as the Art Director of Colle Cristalleria from 1986 to 1992. Mangiarotti’s expertise wasn’t limited to practice alone. He was a dedicated educator, sharing his knowledge at various universities in Italy and around the world. His design philosophy, outlined in his book “In nome dell’architettura” published in 1987, emphasized the importance of creating objects with essential characteristics, making them user-friendly and recognizable. His exceptional work earned him numerous awards in both design and architecture, including the prestigious Compasso d’oro ADI for his carrier in 1994. Angelo Mangiarotti’s legacy lives on, and he is remembered for his profound influence on the fields of architecture and design. He passed away in Milan on June 30, 2012.
