This rare and rich decorated Renaissance dresser was made during the Dutch Golden age in the southern part of the Netherlands currently Belgium. It was made around 1670 and most likely in Antwerp. The dresser was made in the finest quality watered European oak and decorated geometric-shaped walnut veneer panels. The cabinet has two wide doors and two drawers above. The drawers are flanked by carved lion heads with brass rings. The right drawer is equipped with an authentic working lock and key. The doors are decorated with geometrical star-like walnut inlaid raised panels. The doors are flanked by large twisted Solomonic columns decorated with brass nails. The righthand door features its authentic lock and key with a brass ajour cut keyplate. The dresser has a wax finish with a great patina built up over 350 years. This piece of furniture was made by highly skilled craftsmen by the use of the best materials available. It is among the best furniture that was produced during the golden age and even now its craftsmanship is unprecedented. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. Modular "Studio Group" cabinet composed of walnut with a white micarta top, lacquered masonite doors and panels, and angle-steel pulls and frame. The “Curtainwall” principle applied to furniture, allowing easy extension in either a vertical or horizontal direction. An elegant riff on the Eames ESU, designed by Norman Cherner (along with Matthew Cooper) and manufactured by the Multiflex Corp circa 1954. The Studio Group was featured in George Nelson’s Storage book and was a MoMA Good Design selection in 1954. The present unit has two sliding door cabinets flanking a bank of three drawers. Behind each pair of sliding doors is a black masonite bottom and white masonite back. The frame, which disassembles to a large degree, is held together with brass buttons that are optionally visible on the outside (MoMA preferred visibility as expressive and suitable to the piece). Inspired by the classic coffered, hand-tooled metal-clad furniture of the opulent Mughal period. This elegant furniture is hand made from solid pieces of teak that are joined into a repeating pattern of panels enclosed by raised moldings. Pattern makers then trace and cut the complex forms that will cover the work piece with thick sheets of white bronze. The metal sheets are then hand-hammered and embossed with intricate tradition raised decoration before being attached and covering the entire outside surface of the piece. Brass, white bronze, antiqued bronze, silver and copper are the available options for the metal skin. Both silver and copper will tarnish over time.
