Arne Vodder Furniture

Danish, 1926-2009

Along with Vernor Panton, cabinetmaker and architect Arne Vodder was a leading light of what might be called the “second generation” of forward-thinking 20th-century Danish furniture designers — those who, following in the footsteps of Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and others, first applied the skills, traditions and philosophical tenets of Scandinavian craftsmanship to a modern furniture idiom.

Vodder was a graduate student in architecture trained by Juhl, a pioneer of furniture design credited with igniting the Scandinavian modernist movement that swept like wildfire across the United States in the postwar era. Vodder made his mark in the 1960s, when modern design had gained wide acceptance, particularly in the business world. Accordingly, many of Vodder's chairs, created for manufacturers such as France & Søn, Fritz Hansen and Sibast, are quiet in form — projecting an air of sturdiness and strength, rather than avant-garde styling.

Vodder’s aesthetic flair is very pronounced in his vintage cabinets and storage piecessideboards, bookcases, credenzas and buffets. In such pieces, the designer liked to play with asymmetry.

Vodder’s bookcases often have a seemingly random array of variously sized shelves and nooks. A typical Vodder sideboard of the mid-century period — his classic Model 29 case piece is known to collectors — might have four sections, each different in purpose and look: an open stack of vertical shelves, and other cupboards covered with sliding panels in contrasting colored laminates and wood veneers.

As you will see from the works on 1stDibs, Vodder had a sense of what kind of design was appropriate for which space: sobriety in the boardroom; playfulness at home.

Arne Vodder for Sibast Rosewood Dining Chairs - Set of Six
By Sibast, Arne Vodder
Located in Phoenix, AZ
Free shipping in the Continental U.S. is included in this price. Set of six rosewood and leather dining chairs by Arne Vodder for Sibast Mobelfabrik. These are the Model No. 462, produced in Denmark in the early 1960s. This set has backrests in the original black leather with patina and proper wear, and brand new foam and aniline leather on the seats. The rosewood frames are refinished. These chairs are in good vintage condition and are ready for use. Although the set did receive some restoration work to get them in great working order, much care was taken to preserve their charm and vintage character. They show wear and have some normal flaws, but that is what we love about this set. If you are seeking chairs that are perfectly restored and look like new, these are probably not the right chairs for you. The backrests are in original leather which has been cleaned and conditioned but still shows the wear from age and use including color loss, scratches, rub marks, dents, etc. Please look through the pictures to see condition. The seat cushions have been reupholstered with new foam and smooth aniline leather. This high-quality leather is natural with visible scars, lines, and other natural marks, and is designed to quickly patina with use to match the backrests. Scratches and other flaws will show with use. The frames are tight and sturdy, and the rosewood color and grain is beautiful. They have been gently refinished, and the wood is in great condition. Although the finish is new, the rosewood frames were allowed to keep their natural character and patina, and some normal marks, dings, color variation and other normal wear is present. The original Sibast labels are present. Each chair measures approximately 22” Wide x 22” Deep x 31.5” Tall. The seat height is 18.5”. Overall, this is a beautiful set of vintage rosewood chairs...

Trained as a cabinetmaker and architect, he studied under Finn Juhl at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 1947. After school, he worked as a designer at Hindsgaul in Copenhagen, focusing primarily on office décor. In 1950, Vodder launched his own architecture and design studio with architect Anton Borg. Over the years, the studio moved to a few locations within Copenhagen before ultimately settling in the suburb of Holte, north of the city. Together, the two designed furniture as well as several low-cost houses. Vodder and Borg collaborated until the 1970s. Vodder is best known for his furniture designs, which tended to be simple pieces composed of natural materials such as rosewood and teak, often inspired by the natural forms, and occasionally accented with colorful panels. Vodder worked with several respected brands throughout his career, designing cabinetry, tables, seating, and more for furniture makers Fritz Hanson...
