Serena Cabinet by Giovanni Michelucci for Poltronova 1950s Italy

About the Item

Serena cabinet with drawers by Giovanni Michelucci for Poltronova Walnut A sculptural and subtly architectural cabinet designed by Giovanni Michelucci for Poltronova in the 1950s. Crafted in warm walnut, the piece is defined by its clean, confident lines and thoughtful detailing: four central drawers with circular recessed handles sit between twin doors, all raised above two deep lower drawers featuring a bold elliptical cut-out. The composition is quietly inventive—both symmetrical and surprising, functional yet full of personality. A fine example of Michelucci’s sensitivity to form and material, and of midcentury Italian design that bridged modernism and craft with elegance. Italy Mid 20th Century Engraved signature on the side Giovanni Michelucci (1891–1990) was one of Italy’s most influential 20th-century architects and urban planners, known for blending modernist ideas with deeply humanistic and often spiritual concerns. His work defied rigid stylistic boundaries—he believed architecture should serve people and evolve organically with society. He first gained fame for designing the Santa Maria Novella railway station in Florence (1932–1934), a controversial and strikingly modernist project that marked a major shift in Italian architecture. But his most profound and poetic work is arguably the Church of the Autostrada del Sole (also called the Church of San Giovanni Battista), completed in 1964. With its flowing concrete forms and tent-like structure, it became a symbol of reconciliation, dedicated to those who died building the motorway. Michelucci was also deeply engaged in social architecture—designing housing, prisons, hospitals, and community centers—and he often pushed back against urban development that neglected the human experience. Late in life, he established the Michelucci Foundation, dedicated to socially responsible architecture and urban planning. His furniture designs, like this cabinet, reflect the same spirit: thoughtful, sculptural, quietly radical. They’re about how we live, not just what we see.
