About the Item

This extraordinary 1930s high sideboard by Gio Ponti, certified by the Gio Ponti Archives (Appraisal No. 24232/000), is a masterpiece of Italian design, conceived in the historical context in which functional aesthetics and innovative materials were redefining modern furniture. The piece of furniture is a perfect example of Ponti's ability to fuse art and architecture into everyday objects without ever sacrificing elegance. History and attribution This sideboard can be traced back to the 1930 Monza Triennale, a seminal event for Italian design, where Ponti presented furniture with light structures, shaped legs and refined decorations, very similar to those of this piece. In fact, the decorated brass legs and the particular vertical configuration of the sideboard are reminiscent of works designed for prestigious settings such as Villa Vittoria in Florence, Casa Borletti, and the Aula Magna of the University of Padua. The Gio Ponti Archives emphasizes the stylistic and constructive similarity between this sideboard and other certified furnishings, highlighting the rationalist profile of the tapered legs decorated with metal details, which lend a sense of visual lightness and at the same time structural solidity. Design and materials The sideboard, made of solid wood, features two upper doors decorated vertically with geometric patterns that create a fascinating interplay of volumes and symmetries. The finely crafted brass handles echo the recurring tubular theme in Ponti's creations, while the interior offers ample storage surfaces, ideal for combining functionality and beauty. The doors feature elegant grissin reliefs as do its edges and sides. Its knobs are round with forged brass knobs. The contrast between the sharp lines of rationalism and Art Deco details such as brass decorations makes this piece extremely versatile and capable of fitting into both classic and modern settings, adding a touch of timeless prestige. With its official certificate from the Gio Ponti Archives, this sideboard represents not only a piece of furniture of great aesthetic value, but also a historical one, perfect for collectors, museums or representative settings. Every element of the furniture, from the proportions to the finishes, recounts the greatness of Italian design between the two wars, when European Bauhaus and Italian rationalism revolutionized the creative landscape.
