Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, there is a ring on the top that has been sanded and stained but is still visible. We have also noticed a few nicks and dings which is part of its vintage appeal. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1962-1970. Bold Presence, Premium Quality, and Beautifully Broyhill!! WOW!! This is an incredibly handsome gentleman’s or Door Chest #6130-41 by Broyhill Brasilia part of the Premier Series Collection comprised of a beautiful walnut frame bearing a step back top with double doors featuring the iconic Brasilia Premier sculpted arch details and lower section with two large drawers, beautiful brass hardware, and a spectacular recessed base. The double doors open to reveal two fixed wood shelves on the left and four marvelous dovetail drawers on the right. Talk about a handy, functional, and oh-so-stunning piece of furniture! The Brasilia collection design is very architectural in style and that is by no coincidence. The Brasilia collection was introduced at the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962 and drew its inspiration from the architecture of the new and majestic Capital of Brazil, Brasilia. The brochure for Brasilia by Broyhill Premier says… “Brasilia…the city…by its daring and beauty has revolutionized architecture and opened vast new horizons of design. From this inspired dream, Broyhill Premier drew inspiration for the furniture grouping which bears the fine young name: BRASILIA.” This gentleman’s chest is PRECISELY that!!! It would be lovely in an entry way, kitchen or dining space, or function justly as a highboy dresser in a bedroom or dressing area. It has ample storage space for all of your linens, office, or wardrobe essentials and it holds the iconic Brasilia Collection reputation well-known for its unmatchable Mid-Century Modern style. It is EXACTLY what the designer ordered!! It is no coincidence that The Brasilia collection design is very architectural in style. It was introduced to the public at the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962 and drew its inspiration from the architecture of the newly created and majestic Capital of Brazil, Brasilia. The brochure for Brasilia by Broyhill Premier says…….” Brasilia…the city…by its daring and beauty has revolutionized architecture and opened vast new horizons of design. From this inspired dream, Broyhill Premier drew inspiration for the furniture grouping which bears the fine young name: BRASILIA.” This line was extremely popular with the furniture buying public and is still sought out today. Broyhill ended production of this successful line sometime in the 1970s. Broyhill Furniture was founded by 27-year-old James Edgar Broyhill in 1926. Edgar or Ed had worked for his older brother’s furniture company as a salesman, bookkeeper, and clerk since 1919. It is a story of true American entrepreneurship. Starting simply producing single pieces of furniture, they soon grew into a huge well-known and well-respected furniture manufacturer. Ed together with his brothers merged and purchased smaller entities to do so. The company flourished till the depression as did most furniture makers and refitted and remade themselves during WWII to stay in business. After the war with the American economy booming, they expanded further. During the mid-20th century introducing beautiful and extraordinarily successful modern lines. Still flourishing and expanding during the 1970s until in 1980 they turned the tables and sold the company to St. Louis based Interco, Inc. who had also purchased Ethan Allen and Lane. By 1991 Interco had overextended and sought bankruptcy protection. Then climbing out of their slump by the early 2000’s Interco transitioned into their newest incarnation, Furniture Brand International, which remains one of the largest manufacturers of furniture today. Quality manufacturer, versatility, and a striking style that you can only find in a Brasilia Broyhill Premier Series piece. This #6130-41 gentleman’s or door chest is just too exquisite to let go. American of Martinsville Accord Walnut & Cane Dresser & Bachelor’s Chest w/ X’s
By Merton Gershun, American of Martinsville
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome pair of chests from American of Martinsville and Merton Gershun’s Accord line of furniture with the signature X’s and asymmetric handles. One is the long walnut dresser with three drawers and cane doors and the second is the three-drawer bachelor’s chest. Two separate pieces but butted together make one long marvelous piece. We are pricing them as a set. Both are in wonderful restored condition. However, they are not without signs of age and use having an overall beautiful age patina which includes small nicks, scratches, and imperfections but nothing major. Please see photos, circa mid-20th century. Oh my! If you could ever say X marks the spot for a piece of furniture…you can say it with this pair. Note the metal signature crosses in their tops and their fabulous asymmetric or staggered handles. These gorgeous chests are from the Accord collection produced in the mid-20th century by American of Martinsville and designed by Merton Gershun. One piece is the longer dresser which is comprised of a bank of three drawers next to three doors with cane inserts. One door opens to the left and the other two doors bi-fold open to the right revealing three interior drawers. This dresser alone is wonderful but paired with the matching bachelor’s chest, which has the same bank of three drawers as the dresser, and butted next to the doors, making it one extra long cabinet...
