About the Item

An exceptional Empire secretary bookcase in fine burl ash wood. Denmark or North Germany, circa 1800. The bookcase features a tiered bonnet with ebonized end finials over three cabinets with a concave middle section flanked by two convex ones, all offering interior shelving for books. The base has a cylinder top that opens to a multitude of drawers surrounding a center compartment flanked by vertical document drawers. A sliding desk drawer offers a wood writing surface that was originally in baize. The area can be left as is or we can add leather. There are two sliding storage compartments, also in wood.
