About the Item

A fine 18th century George III English bureau bookcase secretary in solid West Indies/ Cuban mahogany. The bonnet features a swan neck, broken-scroll pediment with carved rosettes and a center finial. Upper solid door panels are raised and interior shelves are adjustable. Sitting up on bracket feet with a two over two configuration of drawers, the slant front opens to a simple oak secretary appointed with drawers and open slots for storage. Chippendale brasses are old and have been on the secretary for many years as evidenced by the build up of brass polish on the corners of the plates. Oak is the secondary wood. Measures: 38 1/2" wide x 21" deep x 90” high; 34 1/2" deep with secretary open; 29 1/2” high from the floor to work surface.

A very fine secretary desk of diminutive proportions, this fabulous form features an upper bookcase with a cove-molded cornice over a pair of glazed doors with eight panels each, these divided with original astragal moldings, opening to reveal an adjustable three-shelf space bookcase. The doors are beautifully embellished with fluted pilasters boasting Ionic capitals that are exquisitely detailed with rich undercutting. The lower case features a brushing slide situated over five rows of graduated drawers, the second from the top cleverly fitted with a green baize writing surface that pushes back to reveal storage space beneath while the faceted glass inkwell bottles (one missing the lid) and double trough pen tray are situated along the right side. The timbers selected for the case are above reproach and present with a ruby hue throughout that is incredibly appealing, this finished under a glowing silky French polish to the mahogany veneers throughout.
