Louis XVI Furniture

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

Authentic Pair French Armchair, Louis XVI Period, 1775-1790
Located in Paris, France
These authentic Louis XVI period armchairs, original and authentic, seduced me by their modernity. Very rare with their original cream lacquer, flat and square back "à la Reine", with their strict armrests and highly visible assembly, straight legs turned into quivers in the shape of a column tapered down and fluted. The foot ends in a dice that rests on the ground, while the top is cubic is decorated with a circular molding pattern quite rare contrary to the rosette pattern often used for copies - The queen chairs have perfect proportions in their elegant silhouette. In general, I am only interested in design and contemporary pieces, but in the course of my peregrinations I sometimes come across pieces that do not leave me indifferent. As for the lyres chairs, the baccarat chandelier and the large golden mirror...

Magnificent Console by Barbedienne, Falguière and Dubois, France, Circa 1880
Located in PARIS, FR
Total height with mirror: 383 cm (151 in.) Console : Height : 97 cm (38 in.) ; Length : 291 cm (114 in.) ; Depth : 47 cm (18 in.) Height with pedestals : 178 cm (70 in.) – Width of pedestals tops : 36 x 23 cm (14 x 9 in.) Provenance: Hôtel de Bourbon-Condé, for the Conte de Chambrun, 12 rue Monsieur, 7th arrondissement, Paris. This magnificent white carrare and bleu turquin marble Louis XVI style console is embellished with carved and gilded bronze ornaments. The belt, adorned with a fluted frieze, masks of Bacchus and rosettes, is standing on six spirally fluted feet with foliage on the extremities. The part meant to be placed against the wall is divided in several pannels framed with moulded and beaded bronze. Above the console stands a giltwood and white-painted mirror, richly decorated at its top with a carved head of Apollo flanked by acanthus leaves and treillis. The mirror is framed by two patinated bronze female figures, each holding seven-light candelabra and standing on pedestals richly adorned with laurel garlands and bronze frames. These are casts by F.Barbedienne, after models by J.A.J. Falguière and P.Dubois (they are signed to the base, one ‘FALGVIERE and F.BARBEDIENNE. FONDEUR’, the other ‘P.DUBOIS’ and ‘F.BARBEDIENNE’). The original models of these bronzes were shown at the 1867 Exposition Universelle before being installed at the Château de Compiègne for the enjoyment of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. The masterful console was commissionned to Barbedienne around 1880 to garnish the interiors of the Conte de Chambrun at the Hôtel de Bourbon-Condé, 12 rue Monsieur, 7th arrondissement, Paris. This console was part of the sale of the count’s art and furniture collections that took place on the 18th of June 1900 after the count’s death (listed as lot n°52 in the sale catalogue). Born in 1810, died in Paris in 1892, Ferdinand Barbedienne, the most important caster of bronze pieces of art during the second half of the 19th Century, created and directed in Paris one of the major artistic founderies of his time. Barbedienne specialised in classical reproductions, whose models were exposed in famous European museums. Their illustrated catalogues included many diverse objects such as busts, ornemental sculpture (clocks, candelabras, cups) sometimes even life-sized and also bronzes for furniture. Apart from his own production, Barbedienne worked for the most renowned sculptors such as Barrias, Clésinger and Carrier-Belleuse. All his works were highly esteemed and he, himself honoured by contemporary critics. At the London exhibition in 1851 Barbedienne's firm won two « Council medals ». At the 1855 Universal Exhibition, he won a medal of honour. The success of Barbedienne's firm brought him many official commissions. At the London Universal Exhibition of 1862 Barbedienne won medals in three different categories : Furniture, Silversmith work and Artistic bronzes. Barbedienne was made an officer of the Légion d'Honneur in 1867 and Commander in 1878 when he was compared with « a prince of industry and the king of bronze casting ». His glory did not decline with the passage of the time for at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 the critics thanked Barbedienne for the example he set for other bronze-casters by the perfection of his bronzes. Paul Dubois (1829-1905) studied law before entering the workshop of Toussaint, then the School of Fine Arts. After travelling in Italy, he participated to the Salon of 1863 and won the third medal for the sculpture category. He won several other medals : the Medal of Honour with his Florentine Singer...

Puiforcat (Hermes) - 246pc 950 Sterling Silver & Vermeil Flatware Set + Chest !
Located in Wilmington, DE
The worlds of luxury and craftsmanship often intersect in fascinating ways, exemplifying the pursuit of perfection through design and skill. Two iconic brands that embody this union of artistry and elegance are Puiforcat, the French silversmith, and Hermès, the esteemed fashion house. Despite their distinct histories and expertise, both brands share a common thread of dedication to craftsmanship, quality, and timeless design. The House of Puiforcat (now owned by Hermes) was founded in 1820 by Emile Puiforcat, a visionary silversmith who sought to redefine traditional craftsmanship with a modern perspective. The brand quickly gained recognition for its commitment to exceptional quality and its avant-garde designs that pushed the boundaries of silversmithing. In its early years, Puiforcat became a favored choice for French aristocracy and European nobility, solidifying its reputation as a leading silverware manufacturer. Hermès, a name synonymous with luxury, began its journey in 1837 as a harness workshop in Paris. Founded by Thierry Hermès, the brand initially focused on crafting high-quality leather goods, primarily for horse riders. Over the years, Hermès expanded its offerings and ventured into the world of luxury fashion, establishing itself as one of the most prestigious names in the industry. What sets Hermès apart is its unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and its dedication to the creation of enduring, exquisite pieces. The relationship between Puiforcat (Hermès) and its artisans is a testament to the brand's commitment to excellence. While Puiforcat and Hermès operate in distinct domains—silversmithing and fashion—both brands share a deep-rooted commitment to traditional craftsmanship and quality. This commitment extends not only to the materials used but also to the expertise of the artisans who transform these materials into exceptional creations. The stories of Puiforcat and Hermès, though distinct in their origins and crafts, converge in their shared commitment to craftsmanship, tradition, and timeless design. The legacies of these two iconic brands are not just tales of luxury but narratives of artistry, dedication, and a pursuit of perfection. Puiforcat's innovative silversmithing and Hermès's enduring leather craftsmanship stand as beacons of excellence in their respective fields. Together, they remind us that true luxury is not just about wealth or opulence but is a manifestation of the enduring connection between art and craftsmanship. Puiforcat and Hermès have...

The world of silver-smithing has witnessed the rise and fall of many notable firms throughout its history. In the realm of French silver-smithing, the name "Boin-Taburet" stands as a symbol of enduring excellence, innovation, and craftsmanship. Fabergé, a name synonymous with opulence, craftsmanship, and unparalleled luxury, has captivated the world for over a century. The brand's remarkable journey from a modest Russian jewelry atelier to a symbol of prestige and sophistication is a testament to its enduring legacy. In 1885 Tsar Alexander III commissioned a lavish Easter egg for his wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna. This magnificent piece, known as the Hen Egg, was an extraordinary fusion of artistry and engineering, setting the stage for what would become Faberge’s most iconic creations - the Imperial Easter Eggs. The Imperial Easter Eggs, a series of intricately designed and meticulously crafted eggs, became the hallmark of Fabergé's artistry. Peter Carl Fabergé and his team of skilled artisans poured their hearts and souls into creating these masterpieces, which were intended as gifts from the Russian Tsars to their wives and mothers. The history of Boin-Taburet is closely linked to the two families that merged to create this iconic firm. The story begins with the Boin family, where Alexis Boin, a skilled silversmith, laid the foundation of the firm. Boin's craftsmanship and artistic abilities were quickly recognized, and his works gained prominence during the early 19th century. The Taburet family, on the other hand, was equally esteemed in the silver-smithing world. Auguste Taburet, known for his intricate designs and fine workmanship, brought the Taburet name to the forefront of French silver-smithing. It was the union of these two families through marriage in 1845 that established the firm known as "Boin-Taburet." The Imperial Easter Eggs not only showcased Fabergé's technical prowess but also solidified the brand's reputation as the jeweler to the Russian imperial family. They were exquisite symbols of love and devotion, and their creation marked a collaborative effort between Fabergé and the Romanov dynasty. The quality and craftsmanship of Boin-Taburet's silverware, exemplified in this stunning tea set, earned the firm a well-deserved reputation. Notably, Boin-Taburet received royal patronage from Emperor Napoleon III, which marked a significant milestone in their history. This recognition catapulted the firm to new heights, and they began creating exquisite pieces for the French royal court. Their exceptional work was displayed at prestigious international exhibitions, further enhancing their reputation on the global stage.
