Louis XVI Furniture

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

Important meuble d'appui Stamped Zwiener Jansen Successor
Located in BARSAC, FR
Large Louis XVI style sideboard with central projection presenting a rich marquetry decoration, with trellis enclosing floral-inspired motifs on the front, diamond motifs on the sides. Different types of exotic precious wood are used such as sycamore, mahogany and amaranth. The Fleur de Pêcher marble top has a very artistic veining with a very rich palette of colors. Finally, the rich ornamentation of gilded bronze and very finely chiseled completes the whole, giving an elegant opulence to this unique and rare piece. Opening with three doors on the front. Work from the end of the 19th century. The bronzes are marked on the back ZJ, attesting to the prestigious origin of this piece of furniture. Some details on this subject: The "ZJ" mark has long been controversial among experts on 19th century Parisian furniture, some attributing these pieces of furniture to the Zwiener house, others claiming that they are pieces of furniture from the Jansen house, the latter having bought the Parisian workshops of the famous Zwiener brothers in 1895. We can cite for example Christopher Payne, the leading expert on the subject who writes in his book "Paris la quintessence du meuble au XIXème siècle" in the chapter on "Jansen Jean-Henri (1854-1929)" on page 396: "The initials "ZJ" affixed to the back of the bronzes have long been attributed to Jansen, cited as "Zwiener Jansen". However, we believe that these initials also refer to the furniture made in Berlin by Julius Zwierner and not necessarily to those of Jansen. To complicate things, Jansen bought the "ZJ" master models. The latter being mainly of the type and style of those originally modelled by Léon Messagé, who was an independent sculptor until the end of 1890." Along similar lines, Christopher Payne writes in the chapter on "Zwiener Emmanuel...

Pair of Louis XVI Style Commodes Attributed to Krieger, France, Circa 1880
Located in PARIS, FR
Pair of Louis XVI style commodes attributed to Krieger, in veneered wood and gilded bronze ; opening with three drawers, including one on the belt forming a writing desk and concealing two small side drawers. The commodes are decorated with an interlacing marquetry set with a double net on a green tinted wood background decorated in its center with florets. Rich ornamentation of chiseled and gilded bronzes decorated with acanthus friezes on the belt and garlands of flowers and frieze of posts at the corners, molded frames of water leaves on the side panels. They rest on four fluted feet surmounted by Corinthian capitals, and with a Griotte marble top. These commodes are inspired by those created by Jean-François Leleu delivered by order n° 32 of May 1st, 1773, with a third commode kept in London (Wallace Collection) for the bedroom of the Princesse de Condé at the Palais Bourbon in Paris. The central diamond, originally inlaid with a lily flower pattern, was changed during the Revolution. The pair is now exposed in the Petit Trianon in Versailles (see photo n°1 attached). Jean-François Leleu (1729-1807), Parisian cabinet-maker, began his career as an apprentice in Jean-François Oeben’s workshop. Installed on the chaussée de la Contrescarpe, he became Maître ébéniste in 1764 and moved to rue Royale-Saint-Antoine. He worked for an aristocratic private clientele, including the prince de Condé for whom he delivered furniture between 1772 and 1777, or the comtesse du Barry...

Christofle "Gallia" - Stunning Pair of 3-Candle Silver Plated Candelabra - MINT
Located in Wilmington, DE
Direct from Paris, a magnificent pair of Louis XVI silver plate 3-candle candelabra by France's premier silversmith "Christofle - Gallia Collection", meticulously restored to near new condition, includes two anti-tarnish storage wraps for easy storage, you can't go wrong buying quality, circa early 1900s. The French silversmithing brand Christofle stands as a paragon of artistry, quality, and timeless sophistication in the world of fine silverware. Founded in 1830 by Charles Christofle, the company has built a reputation for exquisite craftsmanship and pioneering innovation. Over nearly two centuries, Christofle has become synonymous with opulence, earning the favor of royalty, securing prestigious awards, and adorning homes and dining tables worldwide. From their revolutionary silver-plating processes to their dazzling silver plate candelabra, Christofle’s creations epitomize the pinnacle of silversmithing artistry. Charles Christofle’s foray into silversmithing began when he took over his wife’s family jewelry workshop. His entrepreneurial vision and artistic sensibilities allowed him to transform the modest enterprise into a global luxury brand. Early on, Christofle recognized the demand for high-quality yet affordable silverware, leading him to explore innovative methods for producing silver-plated items. This ingenuity was paired with a deep commitment to artistry, ensuring that every piece bore the hallmarks of French elegance and meticulous craftsmanship. Christofle’s philosophy of blending tradition with innovation set the company apart. In 1842, Charles Christofle obtained an exclusive license for the electroplating process developed by the English inventors George and Henry Elkington. This technology allowed the company to produce silver-plated goods of unparalleled quality and durability, democratizing the availability of fine silverware. The decision to adopt and refine this technique marked the beginning of Christofle’s ascent to global renown. The electroplating process revolutionized silversmithing by enabling the application of a thin layer of silver onto a base metal, typically copper or nickel silver. This innovation significantly reduced costs without compromising quality, making silverware accessible to a broader clientele. Christofle’s mastery of this technique elevated the art form, as their artisans meticulously ensured that every piece retained the luster, weight, and elegance of solid silver. Christofle’s silver plating involved several intricate steps, each requiring skill and precision. The base metal was first meticulously cleaned to ensure that the silver coating would adhere uniformly. The item was then submerged in an electrolytic bath, where an electric current deposited a fine layer of silver onto its surface. Finally, the piece underwent polishing and finishing, a process that demanded an artisan’s eye for detail and dedication to perfection. The company’s innovations did not stop at electroplating. Christofle continually refined their techniques, developing proprietary methods to enhance the durability and brilliance of their silverware. Their relentless pursuit of excellence ensured that Christofle pieces would retain their splendor for generations, cementing the brand’s reputation for quality and longevity. Christofle’s commitment to excellence quickly attracted the attention of European royalty and nobility. The brand’s association with regal splendor began in 1851, when Napoleon III appointed Christofle as the official purveyor of silverware to the French court. This prestigious commission marked a turning point in the company’s history, solidifying its status as a symbol of luxury and refinement. The French court’s endorsement opened the doors to further royal patronage across Europe and beyond. Christofle created bespoke silverware for monarchs, aristocrats, and heads of state, often crafting pieces that were as much works of art as functional items. Their designs graced palaces, embassies, and luxury liners, including the opulent dining rooms of the Titanic and the Orient Express. Among Christofle’s most notable commissions was the creation of the Sèvres table service for Napoleon III, a stunning collection that showcased the company’s technical prowess and artistic flair. The service featured intricate designs inspired by classical motifs, reflecting the grandeur and sophistication of the Second Empire. Christofle’s ability to seamlessly blend tradition with innovation ensured that their creations remained relevant and desirable, even as tastes and styles evolved. At the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, Christofle was awarded a gold medal for their groundbreaking electroplating technique. This recognition underscored the company’s role as a pioneer in the field of silversmithing and solidified their reputation as a leader in luxury silverware. Subsequent exhibitions in London, Vienna, and Philadelphia further showcased Christofle’s mastery, earning them accolades for both technical innovation and artistic excellence. Christofle’s enduring appeal lies in their ability to strike a harmonious balance between form and function. Their pieces are not only visually stunning but also practical, reflecting the company’s commitment to creating silverware that enhances everyday life. This dedication to excellence has earned Christofle a place among the world’s most esteemed luxury brands. One of Christofle’s most iconic creations is their collection of silver plate candelabra. These masterpieces exemplify the company’s dedication to artistry and craftsmanship, serving as both functional lighting fixtures and decorative centerpieces. Christofle’s candelabra...

Tetard - 165pc. Antique French 950 Sterling Silver Louis XVI Flatware Set !
Located in Wilmington, DE
Direct from Paris, an amazing 165pc., privately commissioned, sterling silver flatware set by one of France’s premier silversmiths “Tetard Freres”. Include a magnificent Louis XVI, 5-drawer lockable storage cabinet and 17 serving pieces and Mother-of-Pearl handles dessert knives. The history of French silversmithing is replete with illustrious names, each contributing to the nation's reputation for exceptional silver craftsmanship. Among them, the firm “Tetard Frères” stands as one of the most prominent and revered. Founded in the late 19th century, Tetard Frères has built a legacy on the strength of its unparalleled craftsmanship, exquisite design, and sterling silver products of the highest caliber. From royal patronage to numerous international awards and accolades, the firm has become synonymous with luxury, elegance, and durability. Their flatware sets, made of 950 sterling silver, like this amazing 165pc. set, are masterpieces that continue to captivate connoisseurs and collectors alike. The Tetard Frères firm was founded in Paris in 1880 by Edmond Tetard, a master silversmith whose eye for detail and passion for innovation laid the groundwork for the company’s subsequent rise to prominence. Edmond Tetard's background as a skilled craftsman informed every aspect of his work, and his commitment to quality soon attracted clients from the upper echelons of society. Tetard Frères were known for pushing the boundaries of traditional silversmithing. Their craftsmanship blended meticulous hand-engraving, chasing, and repoussé techniques with a modern aesthetic sensibility. The brothers perfected the art of creating seamless transitions between functionality and beauty, particularly in their silver flatware, tableware, and decorative pieces. Few silversmiths can boast the level of royal and aristocratic patronage that Tetard Frères enjoyed. Their reputation for exceptional craftsmanship earned them commissions from European royal courts, including the French aristocracy, making their works a staple at grand banquets, diplomatic functions, and royal households. The royal court of France was particularly fond of Tetard Frères' creations. Their silverware and table settings were often used in royal residences, including the Palais de l'Élysée, which served as the residence of the President of the French Republic. Additionally, Tetard Frères received commissions from international royalty, including the kings and queens of Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands. Such patronage not only bolstered the firm's reputation but also further solidified its status as the premier silversmith of choice for the elite. Tetard Frères' pieces were often customized to meet the specific requirements of their royal clients. These bespoke commissions included personalized monograms, coats of arms, and other emblems of nobility. By working closely with their aristocratic patrons, Tetard Frères ensured that each piece reflected the tastes and desires of their distinguished clientele. This bespoke approach to silversmithing added another layer of exclusivity to their work, making each item not just a work of art but also a symbol of personal identity and status. Perhaps one of the most iconic commissions was the creation of a silver flatware sets for the French government to gift to foreign dignitaries. These sets, often bearing intricate engravings or repoussé work, were designed to showcase the best of French artistry while simultaneously serving a practical purpose. The silverware produced for these occasions represented more than just luxury—it was a diplomatic tool, symbolizing France’s grandeur and cultural heritage. Tetard Frères' exceptional work did not go unnoticed on the international stage. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they participated in several international exhibitions, where their craftsmanship was celebrated and rewarded. The firm's pieces were often displayed in prominent venues such as the Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) in Paris, where they received numerous accolades for innovation, artistry, and technical skill. At the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, Tetard Frères earned a gold medal for their outstanding work in silver. This recognition further solidified their place among the most prestigious silversmiths of the era. The firm's pieces on display included elaborate flatware sets, decorative vases, and intricate centerpieces, all of which showcased their ability to combine traditional French design with modern influences. Perhaps the most iconic and enduring product of Tetard Frères' silversmithing is their 950 sterling silver flatware sets.
