Neoclassical Furniture

NEOCLASSICAL STYLE

Neoclassical design emerged in Europe in the 1750s, as the Age of Enlightenment reached full flower. Neoclassical furniture took its cues from the styles of ancient Rome and Athens: symmetrical, ordered, dignified forms with such details as tapered and fluted chair and table legs, backrest finials and scrolled arms.

Over a period of some 20 years, first in France and later in Britain, neoclassical design — also known as Louis XVI, or Louis Seize — would supersede the lithe and curvaceous Rococo or Louis XV style.

The first half of the 18th century had seen a rebirth of interest in classical antiquity. The "Grand Tour" of Europe, codified as a part of the proper education of a patrician gentleman, included an extended visit to Rome. Some ventured further, to sketch the ruins of ancient Greece. These drawings and others — particularly those derived from the surprising and rich archaeological discoveries in the 1730s and ’40s at the sites of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — caused great excitement among intellectuals and aesthetes alike.

Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. The overall appearance of neoclassical chairs, tables and cabinetry is strong and rectilinear. These pieces are, in effect, classical architecture in miniature: chair and table legs are shaped like columns; cabinets are constructed with elements that mirror friezes and pediments.

Yet neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns. Ormolu — or elaborate bronze gilding — was essential to French design in the 18th and 19th centuries as a cornerstone of the neoclassical and Empire styles.

As you can see from the furniture on these pages, there is a bit of whimsy in such stately pieces — a touch of lightness that will always keep neoclassicism fresh.

1860s Italian Antique Neoclassical Furniture

Materials

Marble, Bronze

Italian style "bargueño". Tortoiseshell, wood, bronze. 18th century.
Located in Madrid, ES
Uncovered sample desk made of wood, with the central part advanced and highlighted with a double chapel of architectural composition. Each of the sides has five drawers with the front decorated with tortoiseshell and an elaborate golden bronze lock shield (two rampant lions faced, located on a garland and with a shield crowned between them, in which the hollow of the key). The center of the front has two levels: the lower one has four columns with éntasis, two on each side and joined by an entablature and a top finish in dark wood, and a series of gold metal elements in the center between which it stands out, sheltered under a semicircular arch, the figure of Hercules fighting against Caco; the upper one has some moldings forming some recesses, with an important heraldic shield in the center, all enhanced with volutes towards the sides, and different elements in gilded metal, of classicist inspiration. The general scheme of the furniture responds to a very widespread and valued model in 17th century Europe, of which the best examples have been, as a rule, those of Italian manufacture, and which is continued in the eighteenth century without breaking the compositional clarity of the one that shows in this frontal but yes changing slight decorative details and elements in the area of the central chapel, above all. The practice of using tortoiseshell plates...

The fountain. Polychrome terracotta. 20th century, after CARRIER-BELLEUSE
Located in Madrid, ES
The fountain. Polychrome terracotta. 20th century, following models of CARRIER-BELLEUSE, AlbertErnest (Aisne, 1824-Sèvres, 1887). The figure shows a boy, lying down and almost totally naked, with his head enhanced by a golden leaf crown. It is shown with a shell (with touches in gold), taking water from a pitcher next to it, thus recalling the allegories of the rivers or of the birth of the same of Ancient Rome. It is necessary to compare the present work with the one entitled “La Source” by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, preserved, for example, at the Art Institute of Chicago or the Portland Museum of Art (of which there are a number of variants, changing the characters and the material used). Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was a French sculptor and draftsman trained with David d'Angers and at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He achieved international recognition from his participation in the Salon of the French Artists of 1861 (Third Medal), reaching outstanding works such as various busts of...

Blue Neoclassical Ceramic Table Lamp, William Morris Acanthus Pleated Shade
Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
This vintage ceramic table lamp was handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam from a rare amphora-shaped vase by Flora Gouda, part of the Porcelina series produced between 1950 and 1970. We’ve paired the base with a bespoke hand-pleated lampshade in a reinterpreted William Morris Acanthus print, and finished it with a soft blue silk cord. The lamp was created without harming the original vase in any way. The amphora form, with its fluted pedestal and graceful curves, reflects a neoclassical influence filtered through the clean, modernist lines of mid-century Dutch design. Finished in a pale, slate-toned matte glaze, the vase belongs to Flora’s Porcelina series—developed to meet shifting postwar tastes toward muted, architectural ceramics. Its powdery surface diffuses light gently, lending the lamp a quiet, sculptural quality. The lampshade’s pleated craftsmanship echoes the vase’s ribbed detailing, while the indigo and ivory palette of the William Morris textile subtly mirrors the vase’s color story. Together, the lamp and shade create a thoughtful dialogue between classical reference and 20th-century restraint. This Flora Gouda lamp...
