About the Item

The Alanda coffee table, an iconic piece that ushered in the 1980s, is reissued as a tribute to Paolo Piva, the great architect and designer. A highly successful classic and one of the most popular vintage furnishing accessories on the market, Alanda is one of the most representative design objects of an era full of strong and audacious stylistic signs, very often in dialogue with architecture, of which the design replicated virtuosity in miniature. And the Alanda grid, at the same time pedestal and support for the top, recalls precisely a group of inverted pyramids, a geodesic structure that has always characterized it as if it were a magical object, a catalyst for positive energy. Paolo Piva was born in Adria on March 13, 1950 and passed away on July 7, 2017, a famous Italian architect and designer known throughout the world for his creations in the field of furniture. In Italy he collaborates with major design companies including B & B Italia. from this collaboration will be born the iconic table with an inverted pyramid structure Alanda. B&B Italia S.p.A. is an Italian company founded in 1966 in Novedrate, a manufacturer of furniture, furnishings and other objects for the home. The B&B Italia furniture company was born in 1966, with the name C&B Italia, from the meeting of Cesare Cassina and Piero Ambrogio Busnelli; the latter in 1973 will also buy the shares of Cassina building what at the time was considered the most automated furniture factory in the world, as well as a sophisticated research and development laboratory. The intent to combine design and technology is clear from the architecture of the B&B Italia headquarters in Novedrate (Como): a modern headquarters designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers in 1972.

20th Century Italian "Alanda" Coffee Table By Paolo Piva For B&B Italia c.1980
By Paolo Piva, B&B Italia
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
A B&B Italia coffee table by designed by Paolo Piva, made in Italy around the 1980s. This elegant coffee table consists of a geometric black lacquered base consisting of four inverted pyramidal structures of equal size supporting a thick clear glass table top. The design was an instant success and is already a design classic. Available in a multitude of colour combinations, this particular example has a beautiful clear glass top which together with its black lacquered metal base, gives a sense of light and space to any interior. A contemporary classic. About the manufacturer: the international design company B&B Italia began in 1973 when Piero Ambrogio Busnelli took over C&B Italia, the company he had co-founded with Cesare Cassina. The renamed B&B was thus more of an evolution than a completely new enterprise. Busnelli, who was born in 1926 in Meda in the northern province of Lombardy, was a true visionary in post-war Italy. As a young designer he surrounded himself with other like-minded artists, and later took chances on up-and-coming talents, like Mario Bellini and Gaetano Pesce, who later followed Busnelli to B&B. From the beginning, the company wanted to set itself apart as a strong, modern Italian brand that was based on an industrial model, utilising both high-tech production methods and high-tech materials including plastics and polyurethane foams. It quickly established itself as one of the leading manufacturers of modern Italian design in the second half of the 20th century. Busnelli located the headquarters in Novedrate in Como, near Milan. It was designed in 1972 by the architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, who had just finished jointly designing the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the influence is clear. The building’s brave industrial “inside out” aesthetic showcased Busnelli’s willingness to take risks, as well as predict future design stars. In the mid-1970s, B&B Italia launched Mario Bellini’s Le Bambole sofa (1972). The structureless, yet plump couch pushed the boundaries of design and secured a place for B&B Italia at the forefront of the international design scene, and at the receiving end of many prestigious design prizes. The advertising campaign for Le Bambole provoked as many reactions as the design itself, featuring provocative images taken by photographer Oliviero Toscani of the bare-chested model Donna Jordan on top of Bellini's sofa, and was exhibited at Milan’s Salone del Mobile. Since then, B&B Italia has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned designers and architects, including , Mario Bellini, Jeffrey Bernett, David Chipperfield, Antonio Citterio, Naoto Fukasawa, Zaha Hadid, Chris Howker, Vico Magistretti, Jean-Marie Massaud, Gaetano Pesce, Paolo Piva, Richard Sapper, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Richard Schultz, Ettore Sottsass, Studio Kairos, Patricia Urquiola, Jakob Wahner, and Marcel Wanders, among others. B&B Italia has won four Compasso d’Oro Awards. The first was for Studio Kairos’ Sisamo Wardrobein 1974, and later Bellini’s Le Bambole in 1979, and Citterio’s Sity...
