Angelo Mangiarotti Sculptural Dining Table with Carlo De Carli Dining Chairs

About the Item

Dining room set consisting of Angelo Mangiarotti for Bernini table model 302 with set of six dining chairs model 634 by Carlo De Carli for Cassina Angelo Mangiarotti for Bernini, dining table, model '302', cast bronze, marble, Italy, 1959 At first glance, the table appears deceptively simple: a perfect circle of white marble poised on a single tapering base. But the gesture of its form is anything but incidental. The transition from horizontal to vertical is resolved with sculptural clarity, and the table becomes an object of both use and reverence. Designed by Angelo Mangiarotti, this piece carries both technical ambition and poetic restraint. According to Domus, it was the only known table to be cast entirely in bronze. The base, shaped like a slow, elegant trumpet, was cast at the Battaglia Artistic foundry in Milan, a workshop more accustomed to ecclesiastical commissions and public statuary. It is one of the oldest artistic bronze foundries in the world. The historical weight of the foundry meets the modernist clarity of Mangiarotti’s vision. The geometry of the design is pure and intentional. The base widens as it meets the floor, giving the table a visual and literal stability that allows the top to hover almost impossibly light. There are no unnecessary connections or fussy transitions, only a seamless dialogue between material and form. Please note that the table is in good overall condition, with the only imperfection being a few minor chips along the marble edge. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists. Dimensions table: listed on the page Carlo De Carli for Cassina, set of six dining chairs, model '634', walnut, fabric, Italy, 1954 These dining chairs by Carlo De Carli beautifully demonstrate the modernist principles that gained prominence during the mid-century modern era; a sophisticated blend of functional design and organic inspiration. The overall silhouette is slim and extremely elegant, gently evoking a sense of fluidity and lightness through the gentle curves. The slightly angled backrest and well-proportioned seat ensure ergonomic support. The sculptural quality of the chairs reflects De Carli's distinctive artistic style and approach to design. Carlo De Carli was born in 1910 in Milan and became an important architect and designer in the 1940s and 1950s working with Gio Ponti (1891-1979). He became a keen exponent of Italian furniture bringing it to the international market. Kindly be aware that these chairs are in good, used condition. The fabric shows minor signs of wear and use. Reupholstery can be done before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer.
