Incredible original Witco carved cedar wood Medieval shield. This shield is in time capsule quality original condition. The original red faux fur has a brilliant color with no fading, no stains. Collectors will instantly recognize the chainsaw carved, richly figured cedar wood that distinguishes Witco. The shield is crowned with ornate carving. The medallion at center features a knight’s profile silhouette framed by two horses. The knight is highlighted with apropos silver paint. Two spears criss-cross the shield with gold colored metal chain dangling from each side. We had the piece arranged above a fireplace which seemed more that fitting. This is the ultimate man-cave accessory. LARPers and Dungeons and Dragons fans, you’ve met your match. Birger Kaipiainen began his career at the Arabia Art Department in 1937 and quickly found his own way to make art. The soon-to-begin Winter War and several losses in his personal life cast a dark shadow over the beginning of his artistic career, and this manifested as sadness and longing in his early works. They are dominated by ethereal, fairy-tale-like characters depicted in pastel tones, with references to early Italian Renaissance and longing for a more beautiful world.

Cut from a set of sling chairs by Pazmino this truly one of a kind artwork is the epitome of 'custom' and 'hand-made'. The frame has been hand-milled from a solid slab of sustainably sourced American black walnut by our carpenters perfectly offsetting the character-rich patina of the embossed leather within depicting, among other Incan symbols, Supay - the Incan god of death and guide to the afterlife.
Angel Pazmino is an Ecuadorian furniture maker who has, in recent years, earned world-wide acclaim for his unlikely merging of pre-Columbian American and Mid-Century Modern design elements into his works. Born in 1926, Pazmino began his woodworking career in 1944 as a cabinet maker. Throughout the 1950's and 60's Pazmino travelled throughout the Americas where he exhibited his work and took inspiration from traditional Ameri-Indian artists and techniques. In the late 1960's he added his second authorial characteristic, incorporating graphic elements from the continent's native cultures reviving, as he put it, “the ancient and aristocratic art of leather embossing,” learning from such artisans as master saddler Ignacito Ortiz.
With it's striking depictions of Incan mythology, intricate hand-tooled and embossed saddle-grade leather and a custom, hand-made frame cut from solid black walnut this truly one-of-a-kind art piece is sure to make a BOLD impression in any space it inhabits and is absolutely arresting from any angle. Ideal for designers and collectors alike searching for authentic folk-art from the Andes region this visually arresting piece can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Spanish Hacienda to Safari to Boho Chic and is the perfect addition to any collection.
