About the Item

Large and arresting, this stylized depiction of the great hunter in Greek mythology, Actaeon, resting on a slab of marble with his bow and quiver of arrows, was painted by Leon Dusso, a major figure in 1940s Hollywood. Actaeon, according to myth, offending Artemis, and so in revenge he was turned into a stag and was killed by his own hounds. Dusso was the son of a major art director at Paramount Pictures, and was introduced to art at an early age. After years as a makeup art, he turned to painting, studied under Archipenko, and exhibited widely. His paintings were shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art among others, and are in the collection of the Dallas Museum of Art. The medium is oil on masonite.
