Actresses, off set. Ross Watson (Australian B. 1962), oil on board

About the Item

In 1988 David Stevens directed a film called Always Afternoon, which was set in Australia during the First World War. Watson was invited to observe, and his attention was particularly drawn to the actors waiting off-set. He produced a series of particularly meditative pictures, considered by many to be amongst his best work. Ross Watson is an Australian artist who was born in 1962 in Melbourne, Australia. He is known for his figurative, photorealistic style of painting. Watson studied graphic design and advertising at Swinburne College of Technology before pursuing a career in advertising. However, he eventually decided to focus on his passion for painting and began exhibiting his work in the 1990s. Watson's work is highly realistic, with a strong emphasis on detail and light. He often uses muted colours and soft, diffused lighting to create a sense of intimacy and introspection. Today, Ross Watson is considered one of Australia's most successful contemporary artists. His work is held in numerous public and private collections around the world, and he continues to exhibit his paintings in galleries and museums internationally.
