"Angel in the Square, " Art Deco Painting in Blue, Green & Pink, Paris, 1939
About the Item
Mysterious and dignified, yet full of life and color, this 1939-vintage painting by Emile Deschler depicts an angel on horseback in the center of a village square, surrounded by a mother and her child, a coterie of tall, elegant women, and another woman in mourning, all clothed in deep pink, sky blue and rich brown, with green, verdant hills beyond. The angel is holding a flower aloft, perhaps referring to a scene from legend, and other women survey the scene from balconies above. Deschler painted this when he was still in his 20s, and it is his finest work in our opinion. The painting was executed in gouache, watercolor and pencil on a fine, thin paper, and is signed and dated. (Dimensions include the frame.)
