About the Item
A charming oil on canvas genre painting depicting the innocence of youth, the subjects of this scene are two young children on a cherry farm. A young girl with light brown hair in pigtail braids, clad in a white blouse and garnet skirt, stands with her back to the viewer. She has a pair of cherries draped over her left ear as she feeds a second pair of fruit to the fair-haired boy in blue overalls before her. Both children stand barefoot in the lush green grass dotted with white, red, and yellow flowers, as some chickens forage the ground behind the boy. A man on a ladder can be seen even further back, picking cherries from a tree. The blue sky with pink and white clouds is barely visible, hidden by the thick canopy of trees and the large cream house with a brown roof behind the children. Signed and dated “D Meyer 1880” in the lower right-hand corner, the vertically aligned canvas is surrounded by a lovely giltwood frame with a textured lozenge background beneath foliate and floral margents.
Carl Diethelm Meyer was born in 1840 in Baden, Switzerland, in the canton of Aargau, near the German border. Meyer was persuaded to take up painting by his uncle, who was a well-known landscape painter. Still a teenager, Meyer became a student of the Swiss painter, Melchior Paul von Deschwanden. From 1858-1863, Meyer studied exclusively in Germany, before entering the famed École des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1864. In 1869, Meyer established himself as a genre and portrait painter in Munich, living the rest of his life there. Meyer’s works can be found all over Europe and the United States.

19th Century French Winter Landscape Painting in Original Giltwood Frame
Located in Dallas, TX
This French winter landscape painting from the 1800’s sits securely in the original giltwood frame. The hand-carved frame has several long ribbons, with sinuous fabric curls encompassing a repeating border of two distinct flowers. A slender cavetto molding can be seen inside of the carvings, with a repeating scalloped leaf motif that immediately borders the canvas.
The French School painting depicts an overcast winter day with a small patch of blue sky in the middle of gray clouds above snowcapped mountains. Most likely the French Alps, there are a few evergreen trees...

Antique Oil on Canvas Painting, Interior of an Inn with Dancing Peasants, 18th C
By David Teniers the Younger
Located in Dallas, TX
After the original 17th-century by the famed Flemish painter, David Teniers II (usually referred to as “David Teniers the Younger”, as his father David Teniers the Elder was also an accomplished painter), this fabulous painting depicts a vibrant scene, both in color and theme. Our version, which was painted in the 1700s, is by an unknown, but very talented artist. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame with two layers of beading.
Both Teniers were known for developing the “peasant genre” or “tavern scene”, where members of the working class were shown actively celebrating life. The earthy tones of the interior of the inn (brown and beige) are offset by citizens in brightly colored attire consisting of green, red, black, and gray. The scene is divided into two rooms, with seven patrons (mostly men) gathered around a barrel table in front of a very large fireplace. Two of the men are playing cards and there are two tankards visible. The calmness of this group is a drastic difference from the 11 people gathered in the foreground. A man in blue stands on top of a wine barrel table...
