19th Century French Genre Scene Overdoor Painting on Board

About the Item

Genre paintings, such as this outdoor scene on a board, depict people engaged in leisurely activities, such as picnicking, hunting, or walking through a park. They were popular during the 17th and 18th centuries, with most artists originating from France, Belgium, or the Netherlands. This particular painting was most likely the upper portion of a 19th-century French trumeau mirror or an overdoor in a boiserie room, based on the shaped board that the artist rendered. The surrounding landscape is full of contour and dotted with dark vegetation. A few trees can be seen with sparse, lightly colored leaves, indicating it is most likely early autumn. In the center of the illustration is a woman in red with a large hat sitting on a gray horse. Two wiry dogs trail behind, as a man clad in tan and orange with a bright blue sash gestures to the slight rise in front of the rider. Beyond the ridge, a white horse can be seen with a rider dressed all in white sounding a horn. This rider is also accompanied by an attendant on foot. A man wearing all gray stands atop a small bluff on the right, with a dog on a leash at his feet. A backing board with hanging wire has been added more recently to strengthen the board, allowing our genre scene painting on board to be affixed to any wall of the house.

  • Pair of Large 18th Century French Boiserie Overdoor Paintings
    Located in Dallas, TX
Once installed architecturally in a chateau in Normandy, France, this large pair of overdoors was painted in the 1700s and executed in a technique known as verdaille. Verdaille utilizes various shades of green to achieve a mesmerizing monochromatic effect. This technique’s rich history traces back to the 12th century when it was initially employed to create stained glass for Cistercian monasteries, where colorful art was prohibited, making these overdoors not only aesthetically captivating but also a piece of living art history. Interestingly, there is a hand-written transport note on the back of one of the overdoors (see detail photo) that mentions the paintings were to be shipped to a Madame DeFrance in Paris, at the rue St. Honore corner of la rue Dufour (freight pre-paid). These exquisite pieces are encompassed by wood frames adorned with lavish foliate carvings, beautifully painted in a soothing French gray hue. Each overdoor encapsulates a unique musical scene that transports you to the heart of 18th-century Europe. In the first painting, a man plays the uilleann pipe, a unique instrument with a bellow-driven mechanism that distinguishes it from a bagpipe. The musician has quite an audience, as two women, one cradling a sheep, and four more sheep next to a dog have gathered nearby. In the second painting, witness a captivating moment of courtship as a gentleman kneels before a woman with a tambourine in her hands. He presents a long woodwind instrument, possibly a carnyx, while a faithful dog rests nearby amidst a backdrop of gardening tools. These stunning French verdaille overdoors were once part of a themed boiserie room (most likely green in color and centered around music). They can once again be used to create a theme above a pair of interior doors or they can be hung as a unique set of artwork.

  • Large 18th Century French Oil on Canvas Painting Depicting a Hunt Scene
    Located in Dallas, TX
This large (110 inches high) oil on canvas painting depicts a successful hunter, with his felled game displayed near his retriever dogs. Our hunter is leaning against a stone pedestal, clad in blue coat and pants with his rifle beneath his right hand. The man is wearing a gold cap with red fabric attached to it and has a sword on his left hip. Three retriever dogs stand to the hunter’s left, while a fourth sits in front of him (the man appears to be motioning to this dog with his left hand). An orange terra cotta vase adorned with spiral fluting sits on top of a molded plinth at the top of the pedestal. Ivy has begun to wrap around the vase, which also is festooned with green drapery. On a ledge at the base of the pedestal is the felled game: a rabbit and three birds. The hunting display is surrounded by numerous trees and shrubbery. Mountains and a lake can be seen in the background, beneath a blue sky with pink and orange clouds and birds flying. Based on the size and vertical orientation, the scene was most likely part of a French boiserie room...
