18th Century French Genre Scene Overdoor Painting, circa 1770

About the Item

This colorful and gleeful genre painting is from France, circa 1770. Genre paintings depict people engaged in common activities, such as picnicking, strolling through a park, or romantic settings. In the 17th and 18th centuries, paintings of this style typically came from France, The Netherlands, and Belgium. This particular painting can be considered to be after Nicolas Lancret, the French painter whose works are currently displayed in the British Museum and the National Gallery in London, among others. The shaped canvas has been attached to a wooden stretcher via old nail heads. Utilizing shades of green, blue, and white as major colors, the artist has depicted a joyous scene of young aristocrats spending an afternoon in a forest clearing. A man in blue pants with a yellow striped shirt with ruffled sleeves is sitting on a rock strumming a lute. He is wearing a red toque (a brimless hat) and looking towards his left at a young girl in a brown dress sitting in the grass. The girl is holding a long-stemmed flower while a small dog stands beside her. A woman in a white and brown dress with a flower in her hair sits beside the musician on the rock. She is also looking at the young girl, as is a third female sitting directly in front of the musician. This young woman has on a vibrant blue and red dress with a flowing blue ribbon in her hair. Trees and greenery surround the group and a large hill or mountain can be seen in the distance beneath the blue sky. The 18th century painting was either once an inset over door panel that would have been hung above an entryway or the upper section of a Trumeau mirror. Today, this painted canvas, with its gently curving contour and vibrant colors, can be hung and appreciated as is.

  • Pair of Large 18th Century French Boiserie Overdoor Paintings
    Located in Dallas, TX
Once installed architecturally in a chateau in Normandy, France, this large pair of overdoors was painted in the 1700s and executed in a technique known as verdaille. Verdaille utilizes various shades of green to achieve a mesmerizing monochromatic effect. This technique’s rich history traces back to the 12th century when it was initially employed to create stained glass for Cistercian monasteries, where colorful art was prohibited, making these overdoors not only aesthetically captivating but also a piece of living art history. Interestingly, there is a hand-written transport note on the back of one of the overdoors (see detail photo) that mentions the paintings were to be shipped to a Madame DeFrance in Paris, at the rue St. Honore corner of la rue Dufour (freight pre-paid). These exquisite pieces are encompassed by wood frames adorned with lavish foliate carvings, beautifully painted in a soothing French gray hue. Each overdoor encapsulates a unique musical scene that transports you to the heart of 18th-century Europe. In the first painting, a man plays the uilleann pipe, a unique instrument with a bellow-driven mechanism that distinguishes it from a bagpipe. The musician has quite an audience, as two women, one cradling a sheep, and four more sheep next to a dog have gathered nearby. In the second painting, witness a captivating moment of courtship as a gentleman kneels before a woman with a tambourine in her hands. He presents a long woodwind instrument, possibly a carnyx, while a faithful dog rests nearby amidst a backdrop of gardening tools. These stunning French verdaille overdoors were once part of a themed boiserie room (most likely green in color and centered around music). They can once again be used to create a theme above a pair of interior doors or they can be hung as a unique set of artwork.

  • Large 18th Century French Oil on Canvas Painting Depicting a Hunt Scene
    Located in Dallas, TX
This large (110 inches high) oil on canvas painting depicts a successful hunter, with his felled game displayed near his retriever dogs. Our hunter is leaning against a stone pedestal, clad in blue coat and pants with his rifle beneath his right hand. The man is wearing a gold cap with red fabric attached to it and has a sword on his left hip. Three retriever dogs stand to the hunter’s left, while a fourth sits in front of him (the man appears to be motioning to this dog with his left hand). An orange terra cotta vase adorned with spiral fluting sits on top of a molded plinth at the top of the pedestal. Ivy has begun to wrap around the vase, which also is festooned with green drapery. On a ledge at the base of the pedestal is the felled game: a rabbit and three birds. The hunting display is surrounded by numerous trees and shrubbery. Mountains and a lake can be seen in the background, beneath a blue sky with pink and orange clouds and birds flying. Based on the size and vertical orientation, the scene was most likely part of a French boiserie room...
