Antique Oil on Canvas Pastoral Cow Painting by Julius Bergmann

About the Item

This antique oil on canvas pastoral cow painting is signed and dated (1889) by the artist, “J. Bergmann ‘89”. Because Bergmann used an vertically oriented canvas, the viewer is able to focus on the subjects, rather than the surrounding countryside. His skill as an artist is demonstrated by his use of richly colored details, proportion, and lighting. A farmer, clad in a red and white shirt beneath a brown jacket and a matching hat, is leading two yoked cows down a meandering dirt road that has emerged from the wooded area behind them. The two cows (both white with ruddy-colored markings) are pulling a wooden cart that is currently barren. A blue sky filled with white fluffy clouds is visible over a single house about halfway up a verdant hill. Julius Hugo Bergmann was born in Nordhausen, Germany in 1861. At the age of 18, Bergmann began studying at the prestigious Städelschule in Frankfurt, under Heinrich Hasselhorst. In his early 20s, Bergmann became a student at the art academy in Karlsruhe, under the guidance of Hermann Baisch and Gustav Schönleber. At the turn of the century, Bergmann was himself a teacher at both Karlsruhe and Dusseldorf art academies, with a focus on animals and landscapes. He exhibited at exhibitions in major cities throughout Germany in his lifetime, and today, several of his works are still on display at museums in Germany.

  • Antique French Oil on Canvas Stag Hunt Painting in Giltwood Frame, H. De Forges
    Located in Dallas, TX
A beautiful oil on canvas rendering of a stag hunt, presented in a fluted giltwood frame with a bundled husk border and large, parted leaves in the corners. The painting is signed in the lower right corner by the artist, “H. de Forges”, a member of the Barbizon French school of the late 1800s, who specialized in animal hunt scenes. The vibrancy of de Forges’ painting has not diminished over time; the colors seem to pop right off the canvas. A blue sky with some low-lying white clouds hangs above trees mainly bereft of leaves, indicating it is late autumn. Slender grass, ranging from green to brown, surrounds a watering hole in the middle of a clearing, with a single stag near the water’s edge. Eight white hunting dogs with black and tan markings surround the deer on one side of the pond. Behind the pack is a brown horse ridden by a huntsman dressed in red and black, preparing to sound the hunting horn. Two more riders in red, black, and white, also on brown horses, are emerging from a small hill behind the deer. Hunting, always a very important pastime in France, became one of the more popular genres in 19th century art, along with with quality pastoral and landscape paintings. Realism was a defining feature of the Barbizon School, as artists were attracted to spending more time living and painting in the natural world. Our hunt scene depicts the surrounding of prey, or pre-hunt revelry. The beautifully colored oil on canvas stag hunt painting...

  • Antique Oil on Canvas Painting, Interior of an Inn with Dancing Peasants, 18th C
    By David Teniers the Younger
    Located in Dallas, TX
After the original 17th-century by the famed Flemish painter, David Teniers II (usually referred to as “David Teniers the Younger”, as his father David Teniers the Elder was also an accomplished painter), this fabulous painting depicts a vibrant scene, both in color and theme. Our version, which was painted in the 1700s, is by an unknown, but very talented artist. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame with two layers of beading. Both Teniers were known for developing the “peasant genre” or “tavern scene”, where members of the working class were shown actively celebrating life. The earthy tones of the interior of the inn (brown and beige) are offset by citizens in brightly colored attire consisting of green, red, black, and gray. The scene is divided into two rooms, with seven patrons (mostly men) gathered around a barrel table in front of a very large fireplace. Two of the men are playing cards and there are two tankards visible. The calmness of this group is a drastic difference from the 11 people gathered in the foreground. A man in blue stands on top of a wine barrel table...
