About the Item
Adolf Schreyer is famous and most successful German painter orientalist, whose works were particularly sought after by aristocratic and upper-class buyers at the time. Towards the end of the 19th century, several works also found their way into prestigious American collections such as those of the Rockefellers. Schreyer's motifs are largely attributable to his lifestyle, which was characterised by his extensive travel. After studying at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt, he traveled with Prince Emmerich von Thurn und Taxis through Hungary, Wallachia, and southern Russia, and in 1855 he accompanied him as a draftsman and volunteer in the Crimean War. He became acquainted with soldier life and the seemingly foreign and folkloristic countries of the Black Sea and the Balkans, filling his sketchbooks with numerous horse and equestrian scenes, which would later serve as his inspiration of motifs. At that time, Oriental painting was emerging, particularly in Paris, where Schreyer first stayed in 1856. Its style of painting combined wild battle scenes, animal painting, and folkloristic genres. From the 1830s onward, in the wake of the conquest of Algeria, painters' interest in these "exotic" countries grew, and Romantic artists such as Eugène Delacroix, Eugène Fromentin, and Alexandre Décamps sometimes traveled to themselves. Their thoroughly romanticising and exotic gaze focused on Arabian warriors, noble horse breeds, and desert landscape, which they interpreted in vibrant, colourful paintings. Schreyer himself traveled to Spain, the French colonies in North Africa, Egypt, and Syria in the 1850s, resulting in numerous Oriental scenes. In a free, dynamic painting style, neglecting the graphic element in favour of colour, Schreyer's interest lies primarily in the movement of humans and animals, as well as the fascination with the clothing and demeanour of Bedouin riders. The Orient vibes depicted in his paintings, however, is not a geographically precise place,- instead, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, and the Middle East blend into a region that exists in the painters' imaginations. Many times Schreyer exhibited with great success at the center of this movement, the Paris Salon, France.
These two paintings are spectacular, both painted on a wood panel with great precision and details. They are reflecting Schreyer’s painting Arab Horsemen. Both paintings bear a signature but it’s not clear enough to read.
