"Architecture & Construction, " Allegorical Mural Study for Rhode Island Capitol
About the Item
A superb example of allegorical mural painting, this circular study depicting a female figure in Grecian robes overlooking a child with a plumb line, surrounded by scenes of construction and industry was painted by Robert Charles Haun for the Rhode Island state capitol building in Providence. One of the finest statehouses in America, designed by no less than McKim Meade & White, the rotunda was embellished with a series of murals by James Allen King. Because King's health prevented him from fully living out his plans, his drawings and studies were given to three other artists, including Haun, to carry out. This painting seems to be a highly finished study for Haun's alternative conception for one of several circular murals below the dome, dating from 1946, which was never executed. Haun's lifelong passion was the Navy and the life of its men, and painted murals for two Naval Stations in Rhode Island. (Dimension includes frame).

"Justice Triumphant", Mural Study for Queens, Ny Courthouse, circa 1941-1942
By Eugene Francis Savage
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A striking example of WPA mural art, this study for one of the murals proposed for the new Queens Supreme Courthouse -- a 1930s Works Progress Administration project in Queens, New York -- was painted by Eugene Savage. Like many paintings from the period, the study is teeming with allegory and symbolism, surmounted at the top by the figure of Justice with a long sword, spurning businesspeople at her feet who offer gifts and favors. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, include an enormous mural...
