"Commerce and Industry", Beaux Arts/Art Deco Allegorical Mural w/ Male Nudes

About the Item

A fabulous example of allegorical mural painting, this large piece by Edward Holslag features a central winged figure holding a reflective orb, flanked by two nude or semi-nude male figures representing commerce and industry. The lefthand figure is holding a length of ticker tape showing stock prices for the day, and the righthand figure, heavily muscled, is holding a sledgehammer with a long drill bit behind him. The central figure is looking into America's future, but the flag and cornucopia at her feet suggest that the nation's promise is very bright. In the background, a ship and train are carrying goods from place to place, and a factory is belching smoke as it makes products desired around the world. Holslag studied under John LaFarge at the National Academy of Design, and is best known for a series of rondel murals for the Library of Congress in Washington. He also painted murals in banks and hotels, and an enormous mural for the Congress Hotel in Chicago in 1917. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed in the lower righthand corner. (Dimensions include frame.)
