About the Item
This fantastic view of a great battle waged by a phalanx of nude male soldiers -- probably a scene from Sweden or France -- was painted by Nils Wedel, an important Swedish painter studying in France in the early 1920s. The artist, born in Goteborg (Gothenberg), Sweden, is best known for his Cubist works today, and he was strongly influenced by the work of Fernand Léger in the 1920s. However, early in that decade he studied with Othon Friesz at the Académie Moderne, and some of Friesz' palette can be seen in this painting. The line of nude warriors in the upper lefthand corner of the painting, holding their spears high, the repeated rhythm of their nude figures giving the scene weight and power, is highly reminiscent of the repetition that would be found in Art Deco design in the following years. The fact that the entire scene is filled entirely with nude male figures is suggestive of Italian Renaissance paintings and frescoes, where the beauty and power of the nude is emphasized. This painting once belonged to Elton John, and was sold by Sotheby's in 2003. It is signed and dated. Dimensions include the frame; painting itself is 35.5 inches high by 23 inches wide.

- Condition:Repaired: Small patch visible on reverse. Wear consistent with age and use. Overall, the painting is in fine condition; the paint shows mild craquelure throughout. A small abrasion in upper left corner, and an old repair apparent on the reverse where a small patch is can be seen.
