"Building a Home in Colonial America", Important Tempera Painting, Riggs, 1930s
About the Item
Striking and important, this scene of two Colonial era figures -- probably father and son, one with reddish hair and the other blond -- shows them sawing and splitting logs for a new home in the wilderness, tall trees to either side. Both figures are working intently and quietly, and a variety of details -- such as the father's tricorne hat hanging from a peg behind him -- give a sense of verisimilitude to the scene. The artist was Robert Riggs, who is best known for a series of quintessential Depression-era prints of boxers, workers and urban life, often featuring broad-shouldered, strapping male figures, as here. The painting is tempera on board, and may have been commissioned to illustrate a magazine. It is signed in the lower righthand corner, and retains its original bleached oak frame and linen matte. Dimensions include the matte and frame; visible painting is 18 inches high by 14.25 inches wide.

Robert Riggs
Known for his scenes of prize-fighting and circus-genre, Robert Riggs had a highly successful career as an artist, especially in the ‘30s and ‘40s. His painting, The Brown Bomber, showed the boxing victory of Joe Louis over Max Schmeling. This is one of the paintings that earned Riggs election to the National Academy of Design in 1946. He was born in Decatur, Illinois, and as a young man ran away from home and joined the circus. He studied at the James Milliken University in Illinois and then trained at the Art Students League in New York, but his study was interrupted by Army service in the First World War. He attended the Académie Julian in Paris and then returned to the United States where he settled in Philadelphia and worked for N. W. Ayer & Sons, an advertising agency for whom he did numerous illustrations.

An extraordinary example of Art Deco painting with allegorical meaning -- like so many murals painted in the 1920s and 1930s -- this large work by William L'Engle depicts five nude male figures laboring in the field, symbolizing life in Provincetown, Massachusetts. A Black male figure in the foreground is planting crops, while two other figures in the distance are pulling a rope, perhaps alluding to fishing boats tied up at the dock, while another nude seems to be sinking into sleep beneath a pier -- all with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the background. L'Engle called this "The Five Josephs," perhaps referring to Joseph of Arimathea and other figures in the New Testament. William L'Engle was a towering figure in the Provincetown art colony, and was extremely well connected with America's artistic elite, starting with his trip to Europe as a young man with Waldo Pierce and George Biddle.
