"Fresh New World, " 1944 Masterpiece Depicting Early Suburban Life in America

About the Item

A true masterpiece of genre painting, with its depiction of idyllic World War II-era suburban life filled with children playing and adults attending to their homes and chores, this piece was created by Allan Jones in 1944. It is a stunningly beautiful spring day, and the view is looking through an open window with a blackbird sitting on the sill, into the backyards of a half dozen tidy brick and wood houses. The homeowners are attending to their Victory Gardens and their freshly-washed clothes, and the yards are already bursting with life. Jones, an accomplished illustrator and painter, captures Mid-Century life brilliantly and sympathetically, a fine art equivalent to one of the finely directed domestic dramas produced by Hollywood in the 1940s. The painting is executed in tempera on board and maintains its original frame.

    By Georg Pauli
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
Arguably the greatest work of Georg Pauli, one of Sweden's leading Modernist painters in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, this Art Deco-Cubist work depicts the great Nike sculpture on the grounds of the home of Prince Eugens on Cape Waldemar in central Stockholm (known in Swedish as Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde). The Prince was a great collector of modern art in the early 20th century, and today his home is a museum and much-beloved landmark in Stockholm. This painting shows the sculpture in the foreground, and in the background is a jumble of houses, factory chimneys and institutional buildings, the Swedish flag...
