Circa 1950s French Blanches Colombes Pensionnat Jeunes Filles Watercolour Erté

About the Item

Circa 1950s French "Blanches Colombes Pensionnat Jeunes Filles" which translates to "White Dove Boarding School for Young Ladies" original and signed watercolour painting by Erté. The watercolour and guache painting on paper was originally a stage design which depicts two doves in a cage at the top of the painting with the name of the school written in the pink and blue ribbons above. Two young naked ladies are also enclosed in a cage with bars in front of them implying that it is how they must feel about being at boarding school. Two ornate beds on either side of the room are partly hidden behind the brick wall which holds the bars to the cage. Both ladies are carrying a candleholder with a lit candle in each. A round table draped in a spotted white tablecloth with a blue and white bow at the top separates the two ladies. Signed by Erte on the bottom right hand side. A whimsical piece. Model No 15279. Based on a novel titled "Les Petites Filles Modeles" by The Comtesse de Segur. Illustrated by A Pecoud. Published by Hachette in 1933. " about 2 sisters brought up by a widowed mother.
