About the Item
Painted in the 1940s when Americans were traveling more widely and becoming deeply interested in "exotic" lands and cultures, this portrait of a handsome young man -- probably Mexican or from the South Pacific -- shows him playing a traditional drum. He is wearing a beachcomber hat with bits of straw that shoot upward like a round of fireworks, his warm complexion edged in shadow. The figure is surrounded in an aureole of blue, and his trousers/skirt is deep red, adding some strong color to the scene. The signature is evident in the upper right corner but is difficult to discern. The painting is stretched by not framed.
